Hi am the new owner of a 2005 Kona Dew
I am using it for commuting and also taking the lttle one out on the back. I also want to use it to go out road riding/training on a night. The bike has come with a shimano tourney chainset which looks to have the mtb gear ratio's (42T/34T/24T) and has a square taper BB.
Looking to swap this over for a triple road crank with bigger ratio's
1. Can this be a striaght swap
2. will i have to change/ move the front derailer
3. Will i have to change the rear derailer/ chain length and if so how do i work the length out.
Regards G

Yes if you get another square taper chainset2. will i have to change/ move the front derailer
You will have to move it but shouldn't have to change it3. Will i have to change the rear derailer/ chain length and if so how do i work the length out.
The mech will be fine but you will need a longer chain. Drivetrain components (chainrings, cassette & chain tend to wear at the same rate, so you need to change all at the same time. SO you will need a new cassette as well. Check out Park Tools for chain lenght calcs

you will need to adjust the mech if you move it, if you move it up to get the clearance then the cable tension will be wrong, but this is usually pretty easy to fix.0
