Fulcrum wheels / Shimano cassette compatibility conundrum

I'm a bit confused here. Have decided a pair of Fulcrum R3s are next on my shopping list, but am unsure about how compatible they are with my Shimano 105 11-25 cassette. I've found a couple of threads on the subject, but they lacked a definitive resolution.

From what I can tell, either the '8/9/10s' or '10s only' freehub will be ok, but I've read in the Fulcrum documentation that the lock ring supplied with the wheels is not compatible with 11T cassettes (same appears to be true for the Campagnolo variety).

Assuming the above is correct, is my existing lock ring (Giant 333 hub) compatible with the Fulcrum Shimano freehub, and does that apply to both versions?

Apologies for my confusion, but was hoping to clear this up before splashing the cash. If anyone out there is using Fulcrum wheels with a Shimano 10s 11T cassette, I'd be very grateful to know how they got on with them.

Cheers

P.S. Since the Fulcrums are to all intents and purposes Campy's, does the above apply to all Campy freehubs and Shimano cassettes, or is the issue exclusive to the Fulcrums?

You need the 8/9/10 freehub, the 10s only one is for certain versions of Dura Ace cassettes. Your current lockring will work.

To quote Wiggle's website "Shimano 10 Speed only will accept any 10 speed Shimano cassette including Dura Ace. Shimano 8,9,10 speed will accept any 10 speed cassette except Dura Ace".

Turning that on it's head suggests all 10s cassettes other than Dura Ace will be ok with either freehub. Doesn't it?

You can understand why I'm confused :?

Unfortunately, it's slightly wrong. A couple of versions of 10 speed DA had deeper splines, which the 10s only hubs are not compatible with. Your cassette needs the 8/9/10s freehub body. I believe that DA has gone back to the standard 8/9/10 body as of 7800 too.

Thanks for the clarification, it's very much appreciated. Does seem strange that most online stockists don't mention this issue and simply offer the Shimano or Campy versions. Wiggle are the only place where I've seen the various Shimano options, and they don't seem to have got the differences entirely correct.

    Cheers again.

The reason most people don't offer them is because it was only a part of DA for around 2 years (IIRC). Pretty much the only wheels available with the right bodies were the DA wheels from that edition.
  • I have got R3's with shimano "8/9/10" hubs. I used the lockring and cassette from other set of wheels - 12-27 and 11-23 (one 105 and one ultegra) and both work perfectly ok. Just transfer the spacer, cassette and lockring from one hub to another. The problem only arises if you use a 10spd DA cassette - you need to know which version it is: the recent unique design, or the "standard" design, which it has now reverted back to. (i.e. same as 8,9,10 105/Ultegra cassettes)
