can i run 9spd chain on 8spd setup?...any problems indexing etc?

    No, it will be too narrow and won't fit on the cassette cogs.

    It will be fine - actual sprocket width hardly changed between 8 and 9 speed (1.8 to 1.78mm according to Sheldon http://sheldonbrown.com/k7.html#spacing ). I've used 8-speed sprockets to make custom 9-speed cassettes running with 9-speed chain and that worked fine.

    Nope, different width and will probably cause grief and/or damage.

    Where are you getting that info from - I've provided my source which says they're almost identical, and also my anecdotal experience of running 9-speed chain on 8-speed sprockets (which I also measured, but my caliper wasn't accurate enough to actually see any difference at all).
