making beater ridable

Hello there.
I've just picked up a 10 pound late 80s/early 90s peugeot beater off ebay. It's nothing special, a HLE premiere framed road bike. It seems in good condition, and barely used.
I would like to use it as hack bike, but when I took it out of the car, the sachs huret rear mech appears to have gone (what can only be described as) all floppy. It may have been caused by my mishandling it (it stayed in the boot for a couple of days as I went camping near where I picked it up) Seems terminal, and think i might just replace it (along with a night new chain).
Would a cheap road derailleur be compatible with this? I cannot remember off the top of my head the number or sprockets at the back, but the shifters are simple friction jobs.
I was looking at this: http://tinyurl.com/68ttc6
I'm not afraid of having a go at fixing up this bike, and I come armed with a tool kit and hayes Bike Book.
As it doable? or should I shove it at my LBS (holloway cycles in london if anyone has experience) and ask them to get it road worthy for as little cash as possible
cheers,
SB

Does it have horizontal dropouts, if so then make it into a fixed gear...0

nope, verticle dropouts i'm afraid.
also, I'm not too keen on fixies.0 -
Sora might even be overkill. Even a Shimano Tourney rear will work fine, and in many cases, better than the original. They are ugly mind; Sora is probably the cheapest mech that is ok looking.0

ok. So if I were to grab one ofhttp://www.ukbikestore.co.uk/Product/21/RDTX31/ukbs/shimano-tx31-tourney-6-7-speed-rear-mech.htm and a new chain, it should work right? (I 've checked and I 've got a 6 speed rear cassette, or what ever the correct term is for the rear cogs).
I simply break the chain, un screw the derailer cable, follwed by the mech itself right?. Then clean the cogs, and do the above in reverse, with a final adjustment (something that I can do, and have done beofre).
Sorry for the noob questions.0
