Can anyone recommend a not-super-expensive chain tool which can deal with a KMC Z510 HX 1/8" chain??? Its defeating my various tools due to being deeper than a normal chain...

Cheers in advance.

I use one of these Newton chain tools for the Izumi track chains that I run on track bikes so should work fine with the KMC chain too.
    I’m a sprinter – I warmed up yesterday.
  • Hi there.

Just this week I fitted this exact chain (well the gold version - bling, bling!) using the wee chain tool on my topeak multitool.

I know what you mean by not being deep enough, as I couldn't push the pin as far out as I would like. A wee bit of extra wiggling and the chain broke and re-joined ok.

By the way if you're putting this on a track bike then I wouldn't use the quick-link joining plate that KMC supply. The first time I used one of these it undid itself the first time I exterted any significant backwards pressure on the chain...

...which was quite exciting as I was slowing down for a busy roundabout at the time!

    Cheers, Andy

Thanks all!! It was depth of the chain as viewed from the side that was the problem, but my 'Kool Tool' (?) from my saddlebag did indeed fit it. I think a dedicated tool for the shed is merited however!
