i keeo reading about drinks for rides but am not sure what sort of drinks are being discussed. are these things like lucozade sport or powerbase from supermarkets or are they something more specialised. there have also been gels mentioned to dissolve in your water bottle, where do you get these? and what are recovery drinks do you get them at tesco or similar?

The drinks you refer to are sports specific drinks and can be obtained from any decent bike shop, they tend to have far more carbohydrate in them than the stuff from supermarkets which you could always use as a last resort. Another + for the powders is you can pre weigh out a dose into a plastic bag and then keep it in your back pocket to be diluted later in the day.
On long rides these drinks do work especially when it is hot as they replace the lost salts etc. as for the gel sachets, I only used them for the first time last Sunday on the Rydale Rumble , I was exhausted after 50 miles, I took my first gel at about 65 miles riding the long hills around Egton, at 90 miles I took another gel, on 95 miles I rode Rosedale Chimney, most the riders around me pushed.

You put the gels down your throat not in your bottle

I quite like the SIS products - "Go" is a carbohydrate / electrolyte mix so it's good in hot weather (replaces the stuff you sweat out). "Rego" is their recovery drink - like a watery milkshake full of proteins - yum!

Other brands that spring to mind are Maxim, Lucozade do make a carbo drink (avail in Boots etc), Torq etc. - none are particularly cheap but you can buy plain carbo powder in vitamin / supplement shops and make your own flavours a bit cheaper.
  • I like the SIS stuff.

I use the Watermelon for electrolyte drink, and at 10%. I would buy the sample pack and try them.

Gels are a matter of taste. Some are really vile, others i could slug back all day like the banana gel and forest fruits.

Another good method is a bag of Jellie Babies, and i am told the orange ones make you go faster!!

    High5 +1.

A little harder to find than SIS & Powerbar products but worth the effort.

Other than Tesco & LBS, its also worrh trying "health" food shops (GNC, etc)

  • Tescos have a cycling section?

The below are the 2 I use. They are both suitable for before during and after, although I take Protein after a good ride.
