Puncture resistant tyres and tubes

Ok, in January I bought a new Specialized Allez and love it but ...

The standard tubes and valves seem very fragile to my hamfisted efforts and I want to puncture proof things to an extent.

I'm no wannabe racer and use it for on road exercise only and so would sacrifice a bit of rolling resistance and weight for stronger tyres, tubes, valves etc. I've used tougher continental tyres and "slime" with great success on my 3 yr old hybrid/mountain bike but that has 1.75 by 26" tyres!

Is there anything I can do - eg tougher valves, tubes and tyres - without turning it into a tractor?

Specialized All Conditions Pro's are excellent and thoroghly puncture-proof in my experience. As for tubes and valves, I think they just need careful handling especially when fitting and inflating, and making sure your rim tape is in good nick and properly covering the spoke holes. I use Specialized or Schwalbe tubes. The only punctures I have had in recent years have been due to shearing the valve here it joins the tube (incorrect fitting!) and caused by the rim where the rim tape was not fitted properly. I wouldn't like to use slime myself, I would rather know if there was a puncture.
