Wheel advice new purchase

Hi,
I'm after some wheel advice. I'm going to replace my old wheels (Mavic Crosslands) and was hoping to hear from other riders and get their views.
I do mostly XC on_this and that's pretty much it. Hardest I've gone is Coed D Brenin so the wheels need to be quite strong but I'd rather something quite light.
Would I be better off getting a hand built wheel made by someone like Merlin or getting a better disc specific off the peg number?
Many thanks for all the advice
Cheers
