Tough wheels needed.

Are there any wheels which are tough enough to cycle down shallow steps (under the Motorway on the way to work) and take 28mm tyres? Weight isn't my main concern but the wheels must still be suitable for plenty of miles on my winter trainer.

Before anyone asks, I'm 12 stone, refuse to push my bike and know that it's illegal to ride on footpaths (haven't met a pedestrain yet on this short stretch of footpath).

Would Planet-X's A57 (or 47s?) be OK? What would you suggest?

Thanks.

    handbuilts?

36 hole open pros, or CXP33s with DT DB spokes (straight gauge on rear driveside), on a hub of choice (105, whatever,...)

or 32h touring rims such as the A319. These are wider and heavier but very tough. I use them on my winter bike. Again, consider DT DB spokes.

    2nd vote for Bombproof CXP33's 8)

Mavic CXP33's 36h laced to your choice of hub Shimano / Campag, and if weight isn't an issue go P/G spokes. I had some built up at Parker International a couple of years ago - crikey they were tough wheels  8)

    Hi there.

I'd go for the open-pro's rather than the cxp-33's. I've build sets of both and the open pro makes for a stronger wheel. My current set have been down quite a few sets of steps racing cx.

The depth of your tyre makes the biggest difference, I'd maybe even consider a 32mm tyre if your frame will take it. If your tyre is deep enough so that the rim doesn't bottom out on the steps then you'll be fine.

    Hi & thanks.

Those rim options sound good. I suspect the bike won't take 32mm tyres though...we'll see.

I doubt you will fit 32mm tyres on open pros or CXP33's

Even I would suggest handbuilts for this though - perhaps have a chat with a well respected wheel builder - someone like Paul Hewitt in leyland - outline your requirements as you have here and see what he recomends - it might be a less racy mavic rim that you need which will ensure you can fit the 32mm tyres.

No problem on either. I've got 32mm cx tyres on my open pros, and similarly wide grass track tyres on my cxp33's.

oh well - there you go - I stand corrected!

I'd stil probably have a chat with someone like Paul Hewitt - but it might be that open pros are the way to go!

Open pros are great, but if weight really isn't an issue then the cheaper Rigida Chrina rims, sold by Spa Cycles, are as good in all other respects.

I'm not convinced any road wheel with 28mm tyres will withstand the abuse you're suggesting, without frequent attention. It might be worth the effort learning to build your own.
