I smashed up my helmet last night so need a new one, anyone have horror stories or useless strap configurations or amazingly comfortable stories to share?

I have longlisted my options to:

Giro Atmos/Ionos
Las Haxial
Met Stradivarius/Inferno/Estro
Bell Sweep R
Catlike Whisper
Spiuk Nexion

I think the last 2 are my favourites. I cannot try them all on as I do not live near a shop which sells them, I can try on Giro and Specialized, I do not like the 2D helmets as they sit really high, and everybody has a Giro so thinking of trying something different (I have always owned a Giro and found them very comfortable...)

SO any suggestions welcomed and stories of bad and good things about the listed appreciated :)

You can always send back your Giro and get another one at a big discount.

If Giro helmets fit well, maybe you should stick with them, even though they aren't as exclusive? The fit's just about the most important thing for me. I've had a Giro for a while and recently tried on a Bell and a few Mets when looking for an upgrade. Neither fitted as well. So I bought another Giro.

Got all excited about the replacement policy then, but I have a 6yr old Havoc, I would not want another and needs to be within 3yrs with proof of purchase! so that is a no go. I agree with the fit bit but still would like some feedback on some of the other helmets listed in regards to straps, fitting difficulties etc :)

Might be worth giving them a ring anyway. I had a chat with a very helpful woman there a while back. If you say you lost the receipt....

I have a Spiuk (how on earth do you pronounce that?) Nexion and it's ok.

I did want to change the size cos of the silly straps coming down too low on your face (but decided against it), so the sizing isn't great imo, the quality is OK and of course you have an insect built into the padding which is great,

I love the Giro helmets, but wasnt gonna pay over £100 for their top of the range helmets - so I got the Sweep R for £60. If its good enough for CSC....

Personally I'd only buy one that I'd tried on for fit and comfort, and one that goes with my kit - obviously.

    Hi there.

If you're happy with the fit of Giro helmets, then why not go for the Atmos. It's an excellent, lightweight hemlet and has come down considerably in price since the introduction of the Ionos.

I've had two of these in a row - the second bought for £30 through their crash replacement policy...

    Cheers, Andy

cheers for that. Strange word. I can't really recommend the Nexion really, not for me anyway.

Out of the list btw I would go for one of the giro helmets, or possibly the Catlike, which I have heard good things about.

Having tried a number of helmets the larger fitting Giro's are really the only ones I have found to be comfortable both for physical size and internal shape. That said I can't get the chin strap to fit correctly at the moment. It's either too slack, the buckle ends up near my left ear orit's so tight I feel as if it's going to mould my head to the shape of the insert......

Met helments seem too small and bell one's just dont seem to fit.

OK, I have a small head, between 56-58cm, so the for most brands I am in the M/Lgap :( so the MET Stradivarius, Catlike which were my newly favourite, are not the best options!

So giro atmos/ionos or Bell Sweep R (however these are the 2 helmets my most frequent ride buddies have...)

    Try them on tbh.

I went helmet shopping recently, tried an Ionos wasnt comfy. Tried an Atmos, was too shallow and wide (think i must have a pointy head). Tried a Sweep and it was perfect - cant fault it at all.
  • and of course you have an insect built into the padding which is great,

Mine's a MET Inferno but it doesn't have any insects built in to it, which is a shame.

It fitted me better than the Giro Atmos. They only come in 2 sizes S and L, I have a large although my head isn't especially big, I was just on the large side of the dividing line. In the heat last Sunday I didn't really notice I had it on.
  • OK so after much deliberation and trying on of the Bell, Met and the Atmos, with none of them fitting quite right, the only 2 remaining were the Giro Ionos and the Catlike but I was unable to try.

So the solution was to buy them both and send one back so all excited, but man, £100 is a big hit on a lid!

    Thanks

First off, I'm a member of the big head club and need a large. I usually try to buy a better
quality helmet on sale and don't pay too much attention to brand names. My theory is that
most of the better quality ones are pretty much on a par with each other. I've had my fair share of helmets and as long as I get a large I haven't really had any fit problems(I must
be a normal large). Nor have I ever had any "problems" with the various brands and makes. They pretty much just sit on my head and actually do nothing. Now color and style
just might be something you, like me, would want to take into account. :):) 8)
