Damaged chainset? How damaged is damaged?

Only done around 35 miles on my gt avalanche expert, but have already noticed that the truvativ blaze chainset doesn't seem to deal with things very well. Gear change is smooth and perfect on the rear, on the front, not always so, (most of the time its fine though. Will have a free service at evans in a few weeks as cables etc probably haven't "bed in" yet).
Quick question is,
i've noticed that two of the teeth on the large ring have the tips missing (not next to each other), and what's left of those teeth is bent and probably affecting gear change. A few others have minor damage. The only thing that may have touched them is the occasional branch/twig that i've run over when speeding through the woods (never bottomed out or anything though, or noticably hit anything). At this rate i'll have lost all the teeth within a month and I only do about a mile each way through woodland each day.
Is this normal? Surely they should be a bit more robust than this?

are you sure they're not for "improved" shifting?
check against a large picture on CRC or someplace like that0 -
Yeah, could be certain teeth profiles. The only other way to bend them is to bash them on things, hence why we have bash guards!0

Nick, that is the most retentive thing I've ever seen, do you seriously keep that just to demonstrate the tooth profile, please tell me you were testing a new camera... :shock:0

that isn't profiles, you've hit something, nick has deleted a post, and you might want to consider switching to a dual/bash setup.0

any chance of an explanation/idiots guide?
Cheers for the input guys.
I'm a little shocked i've managed to do the damage without noticing anything happening!0 -
yes i deleted a post as image shack was being odd.
A normal shimano chain ring.
i have stock photos.
but in this case you have hit something. new ring or a bash ring. or just straighten then and keep on using them."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

double/bash
looks a bit like this you replace your big ring with something to protect the middle (and by extension inner) ring. If you size up the middle ring a couple of teeth then you only lose a couple of gears.0 -

Or like this.

okay, new game, we name something and nic produces a picture...
i'll start: minibus0 -
Ok, cheers folks.
are there any decents forms of protection out there that don't require you to lose a ring? would rather keep the full range as I use right down to low stuff as I live up a huge hill, and in all honesty don't even find the top gear quite high enough sometimes.
Oh and shopping trolley!0 -
there are some which go outside the bigun but they are a little less strong...0

basically yes."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Just one more quicky, if my chainring gets too battered, can I just replace the large ring with any 4 bolt 44t ring? for example or or, or would it have to be truvativ like the crankset? are they interchangeable? (I realise this may sound like a stupid question.)
pressumably without modifying the derrailleur it would have to be 44T?
Thanks for all the help.0 -
basically yes you can aqs long as the BCD is 104mm and it is a 4 arm."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Cheers nick, and others for your help.0

Nick, the little grey thing on the cable to the left of the rear mech on your Identiti - what is it? My dad has one on his new/second hand bike and I have no idea what it is!"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0
