Total bike overhaul or total new bike?!

Two posts in as many days, you lucky lot.
A quick thanks to all who replied to my last post RE forks; things are a bit clearer now.
Anyway, I've got this 2005 Spesh Hardrock Sport lying around collecting cobwebs and I was thinking of stripping it down, respraying it and building it up from scratch but with some proper decent kit on it (Reba forks, DT rims, Hope hubs, Juicy disc brakes, XT drivetrain, the works!)
Got to the end of the list, totted up the numbers and the grand total was, well, over a grand. About £1300 to be precise though I could probably shave a couple of hundred off that if I spent some time on ebay etc.
The frame is in tip top condition and rides like a beast (in a good way) but is this too much money to spend on upgrades when £1300 could get you an Onone Inbred or Orange P7?
What would you do?!

If you really love the frame, buy one of a number of bikes for a grand that come in with most of that spec you're after (maybe all of it except the hope hubs) and swap it all onto your frame, sell the new frame to pay for a paint job.
personally I'd spend 800-1000 on a sweet new complete bike.0 -
I'd have to say no. the 2005 HR frame is heavy, rather basic, and not really the same class as the components you plan to put on it.0

So if I gave you £1000-1300 what hard riding hardtail would you go for (if you rode stuff like Kirroughtree black, Coed Y brenin black, peak district, north york moors etc)?0

Yeah, something similar to above, maybe in aluminium if you want to save some weight. That budget buys a very good hardtail, and a mid range full susser. Plenty of options.0

saving weight is for chumps...
seriously, try and swing your leg over a 456, they just make you want to hit everything faster. It is insane!0 -
Try a Zaskar and some skill hehe ;-)
Nah, horses for courses innit? I like a lightweight, stiff, and slightly skittish frame. I can ride it further which means a lot to me with my illness/fitness, and hills are dispatched so much easier.0 -
Well I've already got a full susser in the form of a Cannondale Prophet 2 which I worship the ground it rolls over so I def want a hardtail next to keep things real. That 456 looks mint by the way!0

I would like a proper light xc bike, and I;m contemplating doing up my carrera vulcan with some light kit (it is already ss with v's) and decent xc forks so i have something a bit more skittish. The problem i have is that i tend to be a bit of a hooligan, i bend the steel rigids that i used to have on the carrera...0
