10 Speed Chainset with 9 speed cassette?

I'm about to replace my Campagnolo (9 speed) chainring 39-53, can I use a 10 speed chainring? I'm having trouble sourcing a 9 speed.

    It makes no difference, I am running a 10 speed Ultegra C/S on a 7 speed setup.

    I've just wasted money on a replacement small chainring at £30!! I can get a full replacement chainset for not much more than that; I'll return it to shop tomorrow.
