Kazakh rider Dmitriy Fofonov has tested positive for a banned stimulant during the Tour de France.

The test result came to light Sunday minutes after Spain's Carlos Sastre won the race.

France's anti-doping agency says Fofonov used a heavy dose of the stimulant heptaminol. Agency head Pierre Bordry said the rider was asked whether he had a medical exemption, but Fofonov did not provide one.

The positive test came after the 18th stage Thursday.

tests results from stage 18...guess that means Piepoli managed to avoid detection ?

    anyway wikipedia says:
Heptaminol is an amino alcohol which is classified as a vasodilator (C01DX08). It is sometimes used in the treatment of low blood pressure, particularly orthostatic hypotension.

I'm confused. I thought riders who rode for Roger would never ever ever dope?

This won't do their sponsor hunt any good at all. But at least it was a pesky foriegner, eh?
Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.

His team manager Roger Legeay added: "He said he bought something on the internet and that he did not tell the team's doctor.

"It is a serious offence, he is obviously fired from the team."

IIRC that brings the number up to 4 now. Is that the lowest it's been in recent years? Will we ever get a tour with O positives ?
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
  • What, so cycling is like football or tennis, where they rare bother testing, so never have any positve tests to report? Positive tests means cycling is weeding out the cheats.

    Hmm.

I had marked down as one of the good guys precisely because he never joned Astana, despite the large numbers of Euros a Kazak in his position must have been offerred.

    A real shame for CA.

    Cheers, Andy

A real shame. Maybe you can make the distinction between this rider and some of the other positives in the race, where riders have been caught with bags of blood, drips, syringes and more, this guy gets busted for being a prat.

But with Legeay trying to get some ink to dry on a contract with a potential sponsor - rumoured to be Orange/France Telecom - this is the worst possible news. I hope any potential sponsor can see how this probably isn't the team, just one idiot.
