...How do you do it? I can see there's a pin with a hollow centre and I have the little pilot thing but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing?! I want to take it off for a good clean.

It's a campag chain so you need a special campag tool to put it back together again.
Best bet is to buy a Wipperman or Connex 10 speed quick link. Then break the chain with an ordinary chain tool and rejoin it with the quick link.

If it is a ten speed chain I would definately NOT remove it for cleaning. It is asking for trouble as you can easily damage the outer plate on rejoining. Even using a KMC with a quicklink the only time I ever remove a chain is to bin it.

A paintbrush and whatever degreaser you normally use will get it as good as new on the bike.

If you break a chain with a chain breaker you must do it twice if you want to put it back
together with a "master link". Once to initially break it
and again(at the break) to remove the remaining outer links in order to fit the new "master link", which then becomes the outer link.
I tend to agree with smokin joe and very rarely, if ever, take the chain off for cleaning.
Too much bother and like he, said it's no big deal cleaning it on the bike. I also use the
so called self cleaning wax lubes regularly and I don't have problems. Well, I've got problems but not too many of the bicycle type. :D

Ok, I'll do it on the bike then. Sounds like the easiest way.

I also never take chains off to clean them. I used to, but not any more.

Just wipe it with a rag every week, applying more lube sparingly afterwards.
