what road bike to buy for a beginner 300 pound budget?

I am looking to purchase a road bike. The thing is I don't really know what to buy. I have always wanted to get really into cycling though.
I have a price budget of about 300 pound, And I know that I will get the lowest road bike in the market for that cost. But looking towards a second-hand bike, what am I looking for?

    If you can do enough research before purchase to get a rough idea of a) size b) what stuff you want on it, another idea is to get a secondhand one from eBay. Two of my mates got beauties off there.....This will mean that you can buy a bike with a much higher spec....
