Oh gods does that mean Cavendish & Pendleton are going to have to stop every five minutes for an ad break?0
-
Does this mean in a heavy rain storm the riders disappear or pixelateI've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0
-
So they'll be sponsoring the new British road team as well then?
It makes sense, they're the sort of brand that could benefit from procycling exposure. They're a big brand in Britain and the rest of Europe.0 -
would be incredible if they do sponsor the mooted road team....0
-
Who's more evil - Sky or the folks sponsoring the Russian team?Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.0

I'm trying to work out if that's what this bit refers to:The partnership will cover all forms of the competitive sport from BMX to track cycling and road racing, with the aim of bringing on the elite teams and accelerating the development of emerging talent.
Or does that just mean Team GB cyclists in events like the world championship road race, Olympic road race etc?0 -
Given exodus from companies supporting cycling it's great to see a new entrant,
they did say road tteam sponsorship was still up for grabs, so perhaps sky are not over committing cash yet
Know it's a slightly different topic but when boxing moved to sky for broadcastiing the popularity fell. Can and will the powers that be within british cycling avoid repeating this mistake?0 -
Would be cool to see Virgin chip into a team also. They allready sponsor the super bikes and have been doing well0

I have no personal experience with Sky at all, never having subscribed and not watching it in France. But I suppose they do what all the telecommunications companies do, make you spend ages carefully weighing up the minute details of various deals, then locking you into them, not doing their bit properly, not responding to letters or phone calls, annoying you with faults, and generally wasting large amounts of your time. Ripping off millions of people in dribs and drabs. Sky is a nice name.
The Russians, on the other hand, are global thieves, ripping everyone off including entire countries, full of pretty much overt gangsters, repressive dogs who just kill people they don't like, polluting huge tracts of land, and named their team after a missile.
In terms of evilness, there is no contest. But Professional Sport is like that. Is Rabobank less evil than Credit Agricole or Saxo Bank? Only detailed research could find that out. Even then it would only be a matter of degree. It could well be that the next football stadium is named after a British arms manufacturer, who employ many nice British people. It is a shame that the major role for morality that exists in cycling is in terms of catching individual cyclists who dope. But that is no real surprise, and I am sure many riders would love to work for the missile team, who will no doubt pay big wages and have the very best drug programmes.
End of rant, as I know I am just an old fogey. In fact, I am sure Iain posted that just to get me wound up. I remain calm.0 -

hehe. Good rant.
Sky is owned by Rupert Murdoch who also owns Fox. Therefore I contend they're more evil than the Russians.

but all the ranting is missing the "actual" point isn't it?
More cash for cycling teams is what the sport needs.. I am gonna email Richard Branson and ask if he likes bikes0 -

Didn't the Romans, British, French, Spanish, Americans all do this while empire building?0 -

Or you could try the Danish Prime Minister, who according to the ITV4 podcast will be riding his bike up the Alpe today. If you need a connection, he has a second (or perhaps third or fourth) home near where I live. Denmark should have a bit of dosh.
Branson is a very trendy capitalist dog. Did you see this latest scheme of his to prove he is a really good guy? Maybe he rides a bike too. Nice name Virgin. Maybe he could get together with the Russians and name a team Virgin Katyousha (which is also a common woman's name in Russia. http://www.businessweek.com/smallbiz/content/jul2007/sb20070725_507406.htm0 -

Was an interesting podcast, His name was Rassmussen or something IIRC0 -

Had he told his cabinet that he was going to a summit meeting in Mexico before nipping off to the Alps?Twitter: @RichN950 -

Just imagine Gordon and Alister storming away in the Pyrenees whilst Jack Straw sits on the back of the favourites having won the day before.
If Branston got his teeth into cycling, a British rider WILL win the Tour before 2012. He's just that good!0 -
Much as I hate Sky and Murdoch, this has to be a smart move for them, especially with the Olympics coming up. BC look like they will win a bucketful of medals, and if they sponsor the road team then (providing they stay clean) it's a one way bet for a lot of publicity in a sport that is getting a high profile, especially in a high-spending group of the population which will pull in the advertisers.
Also, would this mean cycling coverage on Sky - you would think so. But does that mean that the meagre terrestrial coverage will go0 -

Could go either way. On one hand it would seem to make sense, on the other hand what's the point in advertising Sky to people who are already subscribers. It might make more sense to sponsor a sport that was televised on other channels, getting your logo and brand exposed to people who aren't necessarily already your customers.0 -
Depends if you are already a Sky customer or not (I'm not). Had to chuckle at the irony of watching Sky-sponsored riders on Eurosport via Virgin Media.0

Just suppose -
- ASO (along with AEG) create a "premiership" of events, as per their current plans
- Live coverage of these events becomes "pay-per-view"
- Sky use their newfound cycling profile and become a Continental carrier for the pay-per-view service, also "MUTV" type sports channel'This week I 'ave been mostly been climbing like Basso - Shirley Basso.'0 -
American Football, on Ch4 close to 14m viewers, on Sky and handful.
Cricket followed by millions on terrestial TV, now only a handful on Sky.
Sky does not do sport any good at all.
Bad news for cycling in my opinion.0 -

Rugby League would beg to differ with you there...
Plus, pay per viewing Pro-Tour events? They'd be mugs."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

So true. PPV is only on specific boxing, football and wrestling matches 'cos they have huge specific one off demand (BSkyB didn't even put The Ryder Cup on PPV)
Where cycling works for BSkyB is it is daytime, summer time and high demographic watchers like golf. They need to be able to justify subscription and advertising rates all year round not just during the football season with good content.
As for being good or bad for cycling well that's up to cycling not BSkyB. There'll be fees involved it's how that's spent/invested that will make the difference.0 -

"The deal, however, does not include the funding of the British national road racing team with which British Cycling hopes to compete at Grand Tour level in the next few years."0 -

I think you've just glimpsed the future LD !!!
It's a kind of conspiracy to provide top-class world-wide cycle racing subscription TV coverage by organisations whose names are all 3 letters long !!!0 -

Doobz you make the most important point - B*****cks to anyone who thinks its a bad idea, it's money to cycling in the UK - whatever people think about the premier league it 's the best (even if my beloved city aren't yet) and that's down to SKY
Money coming in will only be good and if you follow the path by rights we will donimate cycling in 5 years and evryone will complain about over paid stars and it's unfair capitalism
Money is is good for the whole sport
Rant over0 -
This is very bad news for our sport!. I can see the Track racing going to Sky as a result of this deal. Lets hope Eurosport and ITV 4 can keep hold of the races they have.
Big mistake British Cycling no good will come of this.0
