Hi

I've been looking for a while to replace/upgarde my Veloce/open pro wheels for something a bit lighter. From my searches of the net there seems to be a lot of choice in this price range with lots of wheels either at about £200 RRP or discounted to that price range.

Any opinions on Xero-lite XR1s, or other suggestions welcome.

Thanks

If only Campag still made Protons, they were the best Campag wheel for £200 IMO. Shame they stopped them.

You could go for a set of Fulcrum 5s; not a bad wheel and less than £150 from Wiggle.

Alternatively, how about a set of Planet X model B wheels:

£157 (+P&P), 20/24 bladed spokes, and weigh less than 1600g per pair. Very good apparently (I have a set of their heavier A57 wheels which are excellent)
I'm only concerned with looking concerned

I have seen a lot of good things said about the Xero-lite XR1s, that they are excellent value for the money.

    See for example:

Or you could consider handbuilts- Open Pros with... oh, wait :D

For Xeros - either Parker or Zepnat are regular stockists, with Zepnat getting the nod from me for free postage.

Do the Specialized Roval Pave SL compare well against the Fulcrum 5s; Planet-X Model B/C; Xero XR-1s?

I never liked my Xero wheels. I had the XCR-1 which are the same as those linked to in all but spoke pattern. They were very light for the money and stayed fairly true, but they weren't particularly stiff. I had constant brake rub, even in the saddle, and the front wheel would flap about all over the place on rough roads. The spokes pulled through the rear rim in less than a year too, which seems to be a very common problem. Personally I think there are better wheels out there for the money. The Planet X ones linked to look pretty good.

If you can stretch to £250, Chain Reaction are doing FSA RD-600's for £249, list price is £570. They come with a nice, but slightly heavy pair of skewers too. 1.59 kilos for the pair, which isn't too bad - I've just got some and am really pleased with them.

Are you sure you are getting RS20's for that? - not one of the older, better models like R601s?

Are you getting a new cassette and tyres fitted in that price too? - seems a lot - the full retail (RRP) of rs20's is only £144 and like said - ribble do them for £104 - can you not cancel that order?

It does sound expensive doesn't it. I would be mighty peed if I paid over the odds for a wheelset like that. You need to look everywhere before you buy kit JimmyK, all the online retailers and also your LBS to compare of course, it's often worth it in the long run.

I've got a set of Xero XR-1s on my Allez and haven't noticed any flex and I've pushed them hard up some very steep hills. They are a massive improvement on the factory fitted wheels.
