Not pupil - They both studied under Conconi.

Cecchini used to be the coach for the whole of CSC but they stopped working with him after Basso.

Basso worked with Cecchini? But surely he and Ferrari are purely doping doctors? Why would Ivan also need Dr Fuentes?

Yes - Basso worked with Cecchini. He stopped when Cunego was working with him because he wanted to win the Giro too.

You've not explored the Cecchini / Fuentes link? Basso - Ullrich - Hamilton all Cecchini. And there are others too. I reckon Luigi advised them, Fuentes "helped" them.

That's what I was getting at. These guys don't just "do" doping. (n some cases)

Odd - bicycling.com (n that VDV article) are claiming Sastre's VAM as 1650 (and saying he took "just over 40 min") and Ferrari says 1720 for a time of 39:40.

I wonder if Tom Danielson is still working with Ferrari.

Maybe Ferrari stopped the clock with 1.5km to go, when the climbing stops? The VAM calculation is only effective on slopes, not when you add in the flat bits.

I don't recall the last 1.5 km being flat! There is a flat bit but it's not 1.5 km long, and the finishing straight is pretty steep too. I was amazed McEwen managed to pull a one-handed wheelie over the line in 2004!
