infact i'd go as far as saying the hawkhill is the worst value bike i have ever seen, the designer should be shot.

£580 for a bike with crappy 8 speed drivetrain and an undamped fork! There are bikes costing under £400 with better spec!

I think no, only GT Avalanche 1.0 has damped fork for under £500 range.

Not true, there are a lot! Carrera Fury, Specialized Rockhopper.. the list goes on. In fact I think most of the bikes at £500 have a damped fork!

ok, a damped fork is where there is a cartridge in one of the fork legs filled with oil, and this oil is forced through a small hole. this has the effect of "controlling" the compression and rebound of the coil or air spring in the other fork leg.
Undamped forks have no such system, and usually just have coil springs in both legs. this means that on repeated hits. the fork will just pogo all over the place where it is trying to return incredibly qickly all of the time.

(this is a simplistic explanation, i apologise for whatever i have missed!)

thnx guys for all your help. i have tried scott aspect 45 and rockhopper pro disc. scott got a look but pretty uncomfortable for me as x back pain sufferer. i tried their p6 hybrid n being honest i had good ride. best so far are rockhopper pro disc and marin palisades trail. really comfortable and almost spot on geometry. i will decide by tomorrow coz can't any longer.

Always go what feels best. But there are bikes like the Marin for half its price.
