    Miles?

Depends a little on what you are trying to achieve. Ideal nutrition, weightloss, etc.

    50 miles >>> approx 3-3.5hrs. Say 2000-2500 KCals.

Certainly looks a little low on fluids and probably on KCals.

It depends what the weather and my effort is like.

I'd normally eat breakfast before I go out, and then only take about 300 or 400 calories with me as the form of cereal bars.

Normally I'd take 2 x 750ml bottles with me, but often I don't drink it all. At the moment most of my rides seem to include going to my sisters to pick my nephew up so I tend to drink a bottle before getting there and filling it up before going on the ride proper .

For a fast 50m a couple of bottles if warm, but mostly just one.
May eat a banana, or one of my fave rice paper wrapped Pate de Fruits I get from Decathlon in France

Often will have a tuna sandwich and a milkshake at a petrol station if riding just a bit futher or have been on a training ride followed by a 20m ride home

A slower ride will often involve a coffee stop and cake

80km is a standard Sunday club ride distance for me.

Would take 3x700ml bottles but probably use 2, eat probably 2 bananas and maybe 2 cereal bars (If I can remember to). Depends of course on the level of effort put in and how much I ate for breakfast/the night before.

my ride was in ( surprisingly ) very good cycling conditions for once. its a tough 50 miler as there is a section in it that has 5 climbs and all are demanding, that section is where any rider would definitely lose time. i came in with an average in the 18.5 mph zone, given the hills, i was very pleased with how i got on. i should have my new shimano rs20 shimano wheelset for weekend and am looking forward to using them immensely.

i wonder if i had have brought 2x500 ml lucozade instead of the 1x500 ml lucozade would there have been any scope for improvement ?

what other foods are just made for the cyclist and release constant source of energy at a slow rate so as your legs dont die a death mid journey?

so far we have, lucozade, cereal bars and im sure pasta will be in there, what else is there ?

in all seriousness, with 1x500 ml consumption i find myself often having to get off the saddle to let one rip , i shudder what id be like with 2 bottles !!

Everyone is different and it depends on the course/weather/pace/your body/your aims/etc.

If you eat/drink before setting out 80km on 1 litre of Lucozade and two cereal bars sounds perfectly reasonable but I personally always bring more than I actually eat/drink just in case. If it is hot, you are going at a fast pace, a lot of climbing, are stencil thin, etc. you will probably need more. Particularly on the water front, I can go a fair distance in this country with no water at all but in Spain I would be lashing the stuff into me and refilling regularly.

On the flip side a few years ago I did a 167km day on nothing but water while on a 1200-cal/day diet. Did over 700km that week, 500km the week before and the week after, never carrying any food. I was trying to lose weight and it was very effective. I didn't go as fast then as I do now, and didn't have a HRM, but reckon I had my body in a very effective fat burning routine and I didn't need to eat.

For the faster, hillier cycling I do now, with the much reduced fat levels that just wouldn't work at all and so I'd always carry food and water for anything over 50km or so. Only bonked for the first time after I was done with the weight loss and didn't have too much excess fat hanging around. It was after that point that I started carrying food on cycles.

    Bottom line, it entirely depends!

A hilly 80km at near 30km/h I would put into the category of "fast" :D and think you should be eating more food and drinking more water. Do you sweat a fair bit? You need to replace that.

I suspect the Lucozade is more instant but find the cereal bars also definately give a very sharp boost if eaten coming up to a big climb.

Personally I go with one bottle Aldi equivalent Lucozade Sport and one bottle water.

That does seem a little small on the bladder front for only 500ml fluid consumption - were you drinking a lot of fluids immediately before? I'd generlly expect to go once, maybe twice, on a 80km. You could also take a leaf out of the pros book on that one

On my 50-60m club ride I take 2x500ml of fluids(1xsquash,1x water) the water being a back up. Food wise I take 3 x fig rolls but as we usually stop for coffee and cake half way I don't often eat them! The most important thing I find is to eat a good breakfast and keep well hydrated.

Wiegh yourself before and after the ride - any difference will be fluid loss - dehydration. Even a small amount of dehydration can have big impact on performance...apparently..
  • on my normal 55 miler, I'll take:

    1 x 750ml Water, 1 x 750ml 1/2 Orange juice 1/2 water
    1 x Bananna
3-4 Fig rolls or 2-3 homemade bananna flapjacks

that lasts me the 3hrs, if it's hot like last night I'd like more fluid, I don't think you can take too much.
If you don't have it, you don't need it.

    Hilly 50 Miles @ 18.5mph is a very decent pace !!!
    >>> 2hr 42mins.

I can't believe that 500ml is enough to replace the fluids lost. If you don't want double the 'effect' of Lucozade the take at least a further bidon of water.

I think 500ml/hr of water is a good guide for minimum fluid replacement - of course it depends on the individual - I usually consume much more than this.

one thing that comes to mind is, if you guys are downing 1 litre + of fluid, surely you would be piddling like a race horse at the road side ?

Wow some serious under hydration there!

I always go with at least 500ml- 750ml per hour dependant on intensity and weather.

Find that keeps flowing nicely along and never suffer after the ride.

500ml over 3 hours is not doing you any good.
