Hi all,
I have been cycling for years and I always follow the tour de france. I always like looking at the profile for a days stage as it gives a really good idea of the hills etc.
I have used my web development skills to create a new website where you can put in a google route created on http://maps.google.co.uk and my site will create a route profile from it.
Great to add a little extra to your route notes! Hope you like it.

Just to say that I have fixed a lot of the teething issues on the site now and it also now produces a bigger profile map for you!
Postcodes / Placenames now ok on google directions URL
More accurate as step points now used as well for topography
Bigger profile map.
Hope some people find it useful.
Thanks

II just tried this with an 11 mile route in the Peak District, but the route shown on your site is a 1200km route to Leipzig in Germany!
This is the route:

I see what you mean. Maybe postcodes aren't quite working yet....
Try this link. It seems to work.

Hi Kreulintent I appreciate you've probably done a fair bit of work on this but..
this has been done somewhat before..
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/
allows one to record, then look at elevation (using the small/large or off option)
One can save the route, bookmark it etc.. and even attempt to export to GPX format for GPS..
not that I know much about that.0 -

As I understand the difference with gmap-ped you have to plot the route by hand which is very time consuming for long routes. Google routes plus Kreulintent's site automates this.Rich0 -
I think this is also like http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com0

Hiya,
Thanks for the comments.
Funnily enough, it was because I couldn't find anything that did what I wanted that I went and made my site.
I think I have said it before but ultimatly its a personal choice. Google maps are very very VERY good at producing directions on a map. I just take those directions and give you a one-click profile.
Others are similar but I haven't seen one yet that is as simple
Thanks again.

Ok, this is probably a stupid question, but....
how do i get the URL from google maps? whatever i put in the directions box etc the URL stays as http://maps.google.co.uk/
A bit confused?!
I agree that this could be a really useful tool, bikeroutetoaster is good, but google maps is a lot better at "Manouvering" your route to avoid motorways etc. when using the auto route facility on toaster.http://www.KOWONO.com - Design-Led home furniture and accessories.0 -
Google has the walking option as well
arthur
PS - url is top left of the map, above the Map - Satellite - Terrain buttons you have the Print - Send - Link buttons. Use the Link one to get the url0 -
Tom, that is utter genius. I take my hat off to you, sir. That's *exactly* what I've been looking for.Bike lover and part-time cyclist.0

Tom,
It's still not working flawlessly yet, the following link give a different route for some reason...

Hi
This is an exciting development. I'm amazed Google haven't done something like this in either GE or GMaps.
But I was hoping to use the http://routeprofile.kruelintent.com for some routes I'm doing in France. Does it only work for UK?
Thanks

Hi guys,
Thanks for the comments.
Yes. routeprofile.kruelintent.com works for Europe (and indeed the rest of the world) - You just need to make sure you get your route from maps.google.co.uk (Not .com) as the URL supplied for the route is slightly different.
As for the different routes. I have noticed this too but there is nothing I can do about it. I guess the API is slightly different to the methods used by google maps itself.
Happy profiling guys.
Thanks again.

Nice tool - I found you need to use the long URL from your google map - the short version doesn't work.
If you're still developing this Tom, an idea would be to put the Google way points onto the profile so you could more easily relate the profile to the map.0
