Freewheel/ Hub problem

Hello,

My rear wheel was making a sound like a pepper mill so I replaced the bearings (some were distinctly non-spherical) with shiny new ones. I tightened the non-drive side cone to what I thought was the right tightness and put it back on. There doesn't seem to be much play in the axel when I try to move the wheel but when I turn the pedals the free cassette seems to float around much than the rim moves relative to the frame. When I got on and rode, after a few yards riding the wheel started to drag and when I checked the cone, it had tightened up.

I'm not sure if I'm not getting the cone tightened correctly the first time or if there's something wrong with free cassette. So I would really appreciate any pointers.

Thanks,
Craig

You need to dismantle the whole hub - completely - to find out what's wrong. Sounds like the axle may be broken. If you feel it's beyond you, LBS is your best bet.

    The axle seems fine.

If you damaged the bearing seats in the hub body then it's unlikely that just replacing the ball bearings will get it all running smoothly again - you may have damaged it beyond repair. I'd do another strip-down and check the condition of everything including the bearing seats - if there are pitted or rough, expect to fit a new hub.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
