Problem with brake lever on Shimano lever

Hi,
I posted last week about a problem i have encountered with my brake lever, I now have some photos of the unit to see if it jogs anyones memory.
This is the unit
This is where the spring sits
The spring
The spring in position
The base unit of the shifter where the lever will attach and more importantly where the spring will sit
Shimano list a tool for setting the spring up which looks like a spring pin with a wobbly cut
I cant see how the tool would work and I cannot find any info on the tech documents on setting the spring.
If you simply put the spring into the lever like it is shown on the 4th photo and mount the lever back onto the base unit then the brakes worth and the lever returns but i'm fairly sure there was more pressure on the lever return when I first bought the bike.
Now, looking at the "special tool" TL ST-02 it looks like you pop it over the straight part of the spring and wind a turn onto it to give the spring more preload but it looks seriously difficult.
When you search for TL ST-02 on google it comes up with a couple of forums from years ago and everyone agrees you dont need this tool but no one actually mentions how to do it!
If anyone can help me then there is a beer or two in it for you if your ever in the cambridge area 8)

the last advise i was given on this forum about the spring was
"dont remove it or youll be sorry!"
so i didnt. Some people have put it back using pliers but all they said about it was that its a nightmare.

I think that the tool acts as an extension to the non-bent end of the spring IYSWIM and is used to lever the bent lug on the other end back into the little hole. I've never done it but have watched a mechanic do it once - one of those jobs to to test the patience of a saint. Put some soothing music on and take your time..0

Well I have managed that already, it was fiddly - i assumed the spring had to have some more preload on it.
Maybe i shall lube up the cables, is there something that would increase the preload on the spring on the caliper itself? it's a Tektro unit.0
