Yeah i think the obvious word here is "some" rather than all. Thankfully.

Incidentally, I enjoyed it greatly when I pulled up into the ASL infront of the taxi. He was a little bemused - cycles arent meant to be as fast as cars :lol:

The camera was a cheap nikon L10. Its been rattling the past two journeys, lol!  Should replace it soon I hope.
  • That's not Shirley by any chance is it?

Edit: ooh, it is, I've spotted The Hub. I luuuurrrrve The Hub. 8)

Part of it is indeed. :D Some of it is portswood, sholing, I forget where else.
  • I spotted that. I ride Portswood to somewhere north of Romsey & back every day (up the Ave ). If you see some nutter going too fast on a hardtail MTB, being followed by a very angry man in a 306, make sure you wave hello!

You'll prolly recognise me, all in yellow and complaining about my gears on the hillls.

For me it is Bitterne where only a few cars decide to form two lanes at single lane red lights and fill up the road to the gutter! I hate weaving or pavement mounting and so have to wait for the cars to gradually filter through, occasionally missing a change of lights in the process. This results in having to race home instead of taking it a bit easier at the end of the day or face SWMBO complaining about getting in late to see the kids.

Recently I have been running the Portswood bypass end to end (heading for Itchen bridge) for the ease of it but even then traffic seems to sit in the gutter so that speeders can overtake in the 40 limit. Ah well, we live and learn to be safe.
Don't get too close as a broken tail light often offends...

Kyrotek, I have written to the council myself about these unofficial dual lanes and said the space would be better served with a cycle lane and an ASL at the lights. There is a fella by the name of Mr Bostock i think, who does the cycling side of the council's road planning - if you can get someone like him to take your critique on board he will send it further up the chain for consideration.

On bitterne road (the dual carrageway with the limit of 30 heading towards Northam bridge... my Bro was in the Btterne end a few weeks back, no traffic around, pulled in to turn down Bullar rd but the light went red so he waited. A car pulled up behind him and a guy leaned out the passenger side shouting abuse. So my bro tells the guy to behave, guy gets out the car, stands behind the door and is threatening violence and babling about "you did this and that!"

Bro said he barked back at the guy to STFU and he got quietly back in his car. :?

Yeah Bitterne rd is evil - I have sent numerous suggestions to the council about that one.

    That is a fantastic vid...

In my one commute so far I seem to find quite a few cars overtaking waaaay too close, and one van driver even decided to make a left turn when he had only just passed me causing me to slam on the breaks and thank my lucky stars!

How much is the camera and where would be a good place to buy it from?

The replie I got on music rader (I thought they'd atleast like the music, LOL) was one of "Whats you're problem - they're miles away" :? Never mind the fact i now have to struggle to get back up to speed, its alright for motorists, their legs aint the engine.

The camera I was recomended was the Oregon Scientific atc3000 (they are the same people who do all the clocks). I've been using a nikon L10, sadly its not really built for this and it shows this in some of the vids I've made (constant blur, shake, malfunction, not waterproof, etc).

I dont know where best to buy from myself (still waiting on the local camera shop to get back to me).. I have seen the action cameras website, but they've failed to reply to my emails.

Unfortunately guys this is not an isolated problem. I used to live in Kidderminster in Worcestershire and i often rode out up the A449 to Wolverhampton and the A442 to Bridgnorth. Both these roads had the same numerous problems like you have filmed in this video.

Being overtaken too closely reminds me of when i was 16 and had my 50cc scooter. I went to take my C.B.T and the instructor told me not to sit too close to the curb because the closer you sit the more they will try and push past. Good Point really !!!

Yes you are absolutely right as most people who've been cycling more than a few weeks would probably agree with, the actions in the film are not at all uncommon [OT -and that's my argument for making a cycling element part of the standard driving test]

the ones who really get me are those twunts who simply can't be bothered to turn the steering wheel (scared it might break?) and pull out, even when there's nothing coming the other way.

been thinking of getting a helmet-cam myself, only possible problem is that i v. rarely wear a helmet. Can they be bar-fitted, and would that affect it's performance, does anyone know ?

The ATC2k comes with a handle bar mount, youg et more stable footage on the bars but you cant turn the camera to point it at errant motorists,

Mr Bostock eh? I'll look him up.

In the meantime I'll have to save up and get a helmet cam I thnk to bombard the intarwebby with scenes similar to yours. But first... more padded shorts and a proper cycling shirt, I get pretty sweaty with the current weather!

You don't 'arf get close to the parked cars you're passing.
Think: unseen person in car opens door at wrong moment = ouch.

For shirts dont forget to check the sports shirts in places like Blacks and Oswald baileys. I got two shirts good enough for cycling for 15 quid in their last sale. They even have the same weave and materials as the proper cycling ones. I think the make was Trek (its in the wash so I cant check  ) Regatta are also good shirts.

Sorry mate, nearly missed this post.

Yes sometimes, I'll admit I do. I do always try my best to scan around for pedestrians and predict their moves. I'm usually about a foot away from the left handlebar end if the road is narrow, bendy or theres a lot of traffic on the otherside.

Its been nice and quiet the past 2 days. Less parked cars an all :D
