Hi
Can anyone encapsulate the functional & aesthetic differences between these identically priced jackets please?

Thanks!

I have used neither but I have an eVent fabric jacket (of a different brand). eVent is claimed to be the most breathable waterproof fabric (supposedly even better than Gore Tex). I swapped from a Gore-Tex Pac Lite to and eVent, the latter is heavier weight. Both fabrics have a lifetime waterproof guarantee. I have had several replacements and / or refunds over the years from Gore Tex without quibble (in fact I have had about 5 jackets over the last 10 years yet only ever paid for one). Although I am disappointed that these fabrics do fail, I like the reassurance of a lifetime guarantee. I have yet to see how long the eVent stays waterproof, and how good eVent are at honouring the guarantee.

I would expect the stealth to be lighter weight, and the cut looks to be better as a roadie jacket, the venturi will be heavier (eVent is a 3 layer fabric) but probably more durable, and as above, should have a fabric guarantee from eVent.

My favourite cycling jacket ever was the Altura Reflex waterproof, it was very light and breathable but only lasted about 9 months (Wiggle refunded without question and I went back to Gore).

eVent is second best behind gore-tex XCR in terms of absolute waterproofness though, it depends what you want from it...

Thanks both. Its for a 12 mile fast road commute this (& future) winters.

then go for xcr, it'll keep you drier, whilst you use your head/legs to dispense of excess heat

for a commute I think I would tend towards the eVent one, in the hope of better reliability and durability. Though I would probably prefer the Gore Alp X II

Wiggle are knocking out the Gill Pro Speed eVent jackets for £65 at the moment. If you don't need pockets (which I think are a bad idea for lightweight jackets anyway) then these are a real bargain. I've been using them for years and they are my favourite waterproof.

a serious case of small cogs

Gill one looks good but reasonablyaccessible pockets are a necessity on my commute!

the Venturi eVent is a traditional waterproof, I have one, it's really jolly good at being waterproof and breathable, also very wearable as an everyday jacket.

The stealth is a waterproof softshell, ie fleecy type thing, so can can double up as a waterproof and jacket for those dry colder days.

The stealth is perhaps less versatile off the bike, but more versatile on it.. so it's horses for courses and all that.

I've had a venturi event for about 18months & a stealth for about 3 months. The event is ace - I sweat more than anyone I know if I'm riding fast, and the event genuinly seems to live up to the hype. I'm not totally damp-free, but it's better than anything I've used before.
I've probably re-proofed it once - it didn't leak but I've known waterproof stuff to become impossible to proof if it's left too long. The only slight downside is that it's slightly stiff/bulky to wear but it's not annoying. I do like the pockets, but if Gill are doing the same material for so cheap, got to be worth a look. Don't know about Gill, but Endura quality is really good.

The stealth is a better fit - more comfortable to wear. It's warmer than the event, but I find myself using it in warmer weather if it looks like rain, because you can get away with a t-shirt base layer & a stealth & not need any other layers. There's 2 pockets - chest & rear.

Both get used a lot as it's work (Yey!)

Just a small point on these waterproof, breathable fabrics, the water-repellent coating on the outer surface is not necessary to waterproofness, however it makes the water bead up on the surface rather than "wetting out". If wetting out occurs (water forms a continuous film on the fabric) they can't breath, and then the inside gets wet through perspiration, often mistaken as leakage. So keeping them clean and restoring the DWR (durable water-repellent) coating is essential to their good performance.
