Very stiff gear shift change?

Hello, I have Shimano mega 9 gear shifters on a Giant XTC SX. When I am pushing the bottom lever on my left gear shifter (i.e.) to change from lowest cog to centre cog, or centre cog to top cog (front derailler) the shifter is very stiff, in fact I need to use two hands to make the shift (not good). Can anyone advise what I should be looking at to resolve this problem?

    Fit new cables, that should solve your problem.

    usually new cables.

    Is there any junk stuck in the front mech at all?
