I have tried to buy some used wheels without success so I have decided to take a chance and buy some new wheels tomorrow and hope they turn out ok . Hopefully they will arrive for next w/e

I have narrowed my choice down to just 2x wheels which are within my budget
Fulcrum racing 7 and RS20 shimano freehub.

Which of these would you choose and why or would you recommend something else at the same price ie £110.00

I'm possibly in he market for another set of wheels for my Shimano-shod bike having lost my DT's to my best bike.
I don't really want to spend much more than a £100 and having a set of Racing 3's for my Izoard the red Racing 7's caught my eye. They seem to get mixed reviews though compared with the 5's and 3's.

Haven't read a bad word about the RS20's and they look excellent value.

Only thing I would say is you can get '08 Mavic Aksiums for £120 (Shimano-splined). I'm running the heavier 2007 model on my Allez at present and they've proven to be pretty hardy. The rear could maybe do with truing but they've taken some punishment.
I'm tempted to buy a set myself or perhaps just a rear as the front is running straight and level.

cost a bit more, but have you thought aboutthe planet X, model Csor Bs, 125,and 150 respectively... bit above your price range, butread a lot of goodthings about them, the Bs i think (which everthe 150quid ones), are only 1550g a pair, and well thats not bad for thecost ;)
    Road - BTwin Sport 2 16s
    MTB - Trek Fuel 80
    TT - Echelon

You should be congratulated for sticking to your guns. It's a trait that seems to completely desert me when it comes to cycling equipment; otherwise I'd be riding a Fulcrum 5 or Campag Zonda-shod Tarmac or Mortirolo and be far better off financially. :(

I have just been down the same road (no pun) as you, Fulcrum R7 or RS20 :?:
Fulcrums looked good and are well recommended but i thought the old style bent spokes looked a bit ordinary. Also i don't think i could live with the racket from the freehub (sorry campag lovers).
Went for the RS20 in the end, they look good with red / white / black graphics, straight pull spokes and good looking hubs and quiet freehub.
They were replacing my old R500s and to be honest they are not much different, similar weight, similar ride, in fact if it was a blind test i wouldn't know which wheels were on the bike.
So not a big leap from the R500 but overall i am pleased with them.

I think the usual advice is correct, to make a noticable difference you need to spend quite a bit more.

    its not easy is it.?!
It has taken 3 months to be able to save for most of the bits for my new bike.
In that time I went from wanting Dura Ace to actually buying 105 STi  but I'm pleased with it. It doesn't shout `cheapskate' to be honest I can hardly see any difference between them at all.

For three months I have switched from Ultegra wheel quality down to Tiagra and back up to Ultegra again.grrrr Its only vanity to be honest. I want a wheelset that looks good but won't break a spoke or ping first trip out

Thanks Topdude your advice has finally decided me .
I'll forget the fulcrums because I too hate a noisy freehub (didn't care much for the quality of my previous Khamsins to be honest) Its going to be either RS10 or RS20 and from what you say it wouldn'tmake a whole lot of difference quality wise .

thanks everyone..wheels are a bit of a minefield to be honest. I picked up some really nice looking Easton's in Tri UK last week and boy are those bearings smooooooooooooth

If you are going to for RS10s or 20s then plump for the 20s. Every time.

I have no experience of the Shimano wheelset, though I know of people who use the Fulcrum set and are very impressed. Have you ever though of the Gipiemme Tecno 024 ? I had some on my winter bike and they are an excellent w/set for the money, the name maybe doesn't do much for you I know, but very good functional wheels.

yes they look ok but they are a bit on the heavy side and I am not sure I like the look much to be honest. Its a subjective thing of course.
Voc ? Volvo owners club ? which forum did you mean ?

I had a good look at J Jame's site whilst thereand of the 30+ wheels and tyres I clicked on all bar one wheel was out of stock ! they haven't got any stock of anything but the prices look good.

yes I saw these and marked them but on reflection they are an exceedingly boring rim in grey and I want something nice for my new bike build

No I'm a Porsche man through and through  mainly because I can't afford a Jaguar or an Aston vantage sob.
I love the Volvo's they have such amazing comfort and ergonomics .Saw one the other day and I wanted to rip the seats out to put in my house . they were cream leather sports damn they were gorgeous. Even better than the ones in my Pig

yes I was going to ask that too. I looked at both today and couldn't see any appreciable difference ? except £20 quid
