After the incidents in this edition of the Tour de France, we, the riders of Saunier Duval-Scott, would like to make the statement that the team in full, including cyclists, technical staff (Mauro Gianetti, Joxean Fernández Matxin, Pietro Algeri, Sabino Angoitia, and Matteo Algeri), and doctors (José Ibarguren, Juan Carlos Alameda, and María Sagasti) have always believed in clean and credible cycling, and this has been the guiding principle in all team meetings.

Our general manager, Mauro Gianetti, has encouraged us to get involved in humanitarian projects (fighting desertification in Mali, defending human rights, protecting the environment), teaching the importance of the human and ethical aspects associated with cycling beyond sports results.
I feel sorry for the riders who have been let down but "Mauro Gianetti... and José Ibarguren... have always believed in clean and credible cycling, and this has been the guiding principle in all team meetings" rings totally hollow. Gianetti almost died from doping and Ibarguen was Rumsas's doctor at Lampre.

Until some of the staff within the team confess or move on, the riders and sponsor need to question who is charged with running the team.

If the team management, or the sponsor, were serious about credible cycling then they would have ensured that they had an internal testing program in place, preferably one run by an independent third party.

They didn't and any protestations they make now have a very hollow ring to them.

Indeed. Several teams like Credit Agricole, Bouygues, FDJ etc don't have internal testing, no Danish doctors, no American Centre for Profiting from Witchhunts, they just have honesty. Sometimes it might be thin on the ground but it does work, but you need the right staff and only to sign riders willing to play along.
  • An interesting point that. It's like an honesty box - some people put nothing in, some put a bit in and some go the whole hog.

Freakonomics will tell you that those with the most to lose will be the most dishonest...

So how many of that technical staff listed were doped off their heads when they were riders themselves ?
CFA has pointed the finger very pointedly.

There must've been an error in the translation from Spanish. The correct translation would probably read: "WE weren't caught. Please give us a job, 'cause we won't be keeping this one for too long methinks."

Saunier Duval have announced they are pulling out of cycling today. Don't know if they will buy themselves out of the contract, T-Mobile/Barloworld style.

The riders can start writing more letters, this time accompanied with a CV.

With the contraction of teams leaving the ProTour I can't see many of them getting top level contracts so easily.

I hope honesty and fairness in cycling will be kept by the pro tours team..
It's the main idea anyway...we all need the money, but playing in the fair game is the most important off all...
