a bigger question is why a 28 year old guy has braces on his teeth, something more generally associated with teenagers going through growth phases. Similar contraptions also used to be commonly seen on the teeth of american sprinters, including Marion Jones. All very strange.

On a completely unrelated note, it's a known side affect of HGH use that changes occur in the teeth / jaw area necessetating the use of braces.

    yes this is blatant speculation.

It's increasingly common in adults. Tom Cruise had them a couple of years ago and he's in his mid forties.

American sprinters tend to come from poor backgrounds and wouldn't have had family medical/dental insurance as kids.

and movie stars arent vain enought o take HGH for it's supposed anti-aging properties? Sly Stallone anyone?!

Ref. US sprinters - clean as whistles, of course...

If Cruise had taken Human Growth Hormone - he should ask for his money back. He's tiny.

So let me get this straight. You're accusing Simon Gerrans of being a doper based on the fact that:

    a) Both he and Marion Jones wear braces on their teeth
    b) Sylvester Stallone was caught using HGH?!

Couldn't he have just won because he got into a good break, was given a 17 minute head start by the peloton, and rode sensibly on the climb, taking his opportunity when it arrived?

The most likely reason for wearing braces is to improve the look of your teeth. If you think it's so a rider (on a team with a 20 year spotless reputation) can cover up a small indication of drug use then your cynacism has probably got th beeter of you.

If you drink lots of water after exercising, shall I assume you're trying to dilute your urine in case of a surprise drug test?

how many 20-odd year olds do you see in everyday life that suddenly need braces? Very few, if any.
How many sports people have been seen wearing them in sports that have a history of PED use? Quite a few. This is not about a single individual per se, but it's a not a good image to project.
Go and look up all the details about use of HGH going vback into the 80s.

As for the comments about spotless teams etc. - ha ha ha. I'm sorry but all available evidence suggests that even in teams where the management may not be on board, there is plenty of scope for individuals to get up to their own thing if they like. And I think we all know that the usual 'i've passed all the tests' line means nothing these days.

Lots actually. Many people get their teeth straightened in adulthood.

I've heard some daft theories on drug usage but yours had had tears of laughter streaming down my cheeks.

Credit Ag havent had any scandals though have they ? Didnt it come out in the Vaughters/Andreu IMs that they were clean - unlike what Lance had allegedly told them ?

Its getting a bit paranoid when you cant have a pair of braces without someone pointing the finger.

I cant think of any doping cyclists that have been busted who wore braces ? Festina ? Ullrich ? Basso ? Levi ? Tyler ? Rumsas ? Nope....

My conclusion is - he has wonky teeth.

ok, Gerrans aside, as I'm not sure whether HGH would be as much use to cyclists as other stuff, however - read and learn (written by former head of UK Anti-doping organisation) it's quite a long article so apologies.

    Quote:

Using HGH isn't without risk though. Side-effects include abnormal growth in extremities such as feet, hands and jaws, which is why Ben Johnson's former coach, Charlie Francis, asked why, at the Tokyo World Championships in 1991, seven of the eleven athletes from Carl Lewis' elite sprint club, the Santa Monica Track Club, wore teeth braces, compared to around 0.3% of the adult population.
