spoke to manager at LBS about wheelsets, he said i could place a custom order for a set of hand builts and it would cost me £175, he said they were mavik, mavek or something like that, im not sure how to spell it. he said they were very good wheelset and much better than the standard wheelset that came on my trek1000. the handbuilt wheels had considerably less spokes than the ones that came on my trek incidentally. this sound like a step in the right direction ?

  • if they have considerably less spokes than those on the bike then it's unlikely that they are handbuilt.
handbuilt would have 28, 32 or 36 spokes. from what you say it sounds more like a pair of factory mavics.

Yes standard Mavics and not much custom about them! You should ask more of your LBS, in particular the spoke name and number, make of hub, and of course the rims themselves.

mavic do a range of rims hard to say without specifiying which rim
