    I think Cipollini used to do about 1800W, so something similar I'd imagine. Garmin-Chipotle may have some stats on their website as to what Julian Dean was doing .

    Not sure about power, but he's travelling at 74kph (46mph) according to the finish line radar! :shock:

    Really!
    According to Ligget and Imlach on ITV4 this evening, Cavendish managed 74 kph on one of the Pyrenees’ descents. They spoke of his descent speed as if something special, but I only thought, for a professional, what a wimp. I've been far faster on local descents, as well as in the Pyrenees and Alps; just this Wednesday lunchtime I reached 80.2 kph.
    But 74 kph on a sprint I find really impressive.
  • I thought they (Ligget and co.) were referring to his speed in the sprint not in his descent....I'm sre thats what I heard anyway :D

    He must have meant 74 mph for the descent. I've done 85 kph down a hill in Wales and I'm nothing special.

    74 kph on the flat I really can't imagine.

    I'm pretty sure tom oonen can hit 1500 watts for a 30 second effort.
    Some track riders can hit more than that, but generally they only hold it for <15 seconds. There was a track rider I read about a few months ago who could put out more than 2000 watts for a very short period of time!

    The line you're thinking of he was referring to finishing speed. The commentator was commenting on what Cav could sprint at in comparison to descending speeds.

    Whereas I'm pretty certain no-one has ever hit 74mph on a descent. Sean kelly once clocked 115kph on a descent on his onboard computer, for top end speed downhill you're looking at 100kph which is rarely beaten.

    I think that it was Sean Yates who hit 115kph.

    54x11 @ 120rpm - you do the maths (uncannilly => 74 kph)

    Don't forget he's getting lead out by guys who are pretty good sprinters themselves - he's only riding in the wind for 200m or so....................but yeah it's still pretty impressive.

    What I meant was, while I can imagine someone like Cav doing it, I can't imagine what it would be like to be on a bike doing that speed.

    Uncannily that's my maximum speed, although that's down the Rhondda side of the Rhigos, and my legs aren't going round at all :D

    Even more uncannily, you did it at exactly the same place.
