Shimano 12-27 cassette - can you swap the 12 for an 11 ???

I've got the Shimano R700 compact crank with a 12-27 on the back (only way a 41yr old can get up some of those Cumbrian hills - Hardknott/Wrynose !!!).
As a lot of you are probably aware, when your banging it down them hills, you sometimes run out of a top-end gear. :?
I see you can buy the 11 tooth sprocket, and was just wondering if it is ok to simply swap the existing 12 for the 11. Anybody ever done this ?
I know you can buy a SRAM 11-28, such as on various Spesh bikes with Shimano drivetrain, but don't really want to have to fork out £55 for one.
I also heard that Shimano were supposed to be bringing out their own 11-28, but not seen anything. Anyone else heard this ?

You can't just swap the 12 for a 11,
It'd go 11-13-14-15 ... 11 to 13 is rather a large jump, you'd have to swap the first half of the cassette.
I can get to 40+mph on 50-12, and if I use the 50-11 I need to be at such a high cadence coming down the hill that I'd be less aerodynamic anyway. Just get aero, there's no real need for a 11 sprocket, especially if you need the 27 sprocket.0 -
as red dragon says it would be a bit of a jump but this wouldn't necesarily matter actually because you are only rarely going to use it on the big ring for fast decents. It would be unusable on the small ring because of the chain angle and its always better to change up mid cassette anyway
However you will need to get a replacement 11t lock ring with it as it has a reduced diameter compared to a 12 tooth .0 -
The obvious solution here is to buy a fixie and train your legs to spin faster!0

Thanks guys. Just thought I'd check anyway.
I understand that it'd be a big jump, but like 'peanut' says, I'd probably only use it on big descents.
Managed to get 51mph coming down from the Lauteret towards Bourg D'Oisans on the 50-12, but could've just done with that extra gear so I wasn't spinning sooo fast.
Thanks again guys."There are no hills, there is no wind, I feel no pain !"

At that speed a 50-11 isn't going to do much, I wouldn't even bother pedalling, just get aero.0
