Can I point you in the direction of www.cornwallmtb.kk5.org we're a club down here meeting every sunday morning, we're riding up at Bodmin this weekend. Closer to home try Bissoe/Poldice valley for trails round the old quarry, idless woods

cardinham woods , bodmin, is good for a few hours of fun.
But you are right the st austell area is pants . For a morning blast i go up to eden using the clay trails come back down the same trail then head off to mevagissey for an ice cream then home . not very tecnical or exciting but its just nice to get out on the bike .

    Yea, st austell is rubbish,
and i reguarly do the clay trails they are quite fum but the bad thing is you have to cycle all the way up the bypass to get there which is a real pain for you legs.

    thanks

You could try luxulyan woods, meant to be some decent riding up around that way.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

There is a ride on Sunday from the Borough Arms in Bodmin (on the Cornwall MTB site)

I am going to Plymouth Sunday morning for approx 20 miles on Dartmoor. If you want to come along PM me with your mobile.

There is also a thread on this section of BRadar where people will arrange 'non club' rides - http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopi ... &start=555

With the amount of club members & others on BRadar, you will have normally be able to get out every weekend and at least one eve a week.

  • if your down on the pentuwan trail in kings woods there used to be a few good routes in and around the woods (going back a few years thoguh!) but just where the path forks by the last bit of car access there used to be a couple of sections of single tracks that would take you right through the woods one of them used to cross the stream through there, but if you stay to the left of the stream the tracks used to take you all the way down to the sharp right left bend ont he trail and an off shoot used to take you through to the carpark section on the main road through to pentuwan, and there used to be another sectionthat you had a small bank to ride up and go along the bottom of the valley edge,

if you look around in kings woods there are a few places to go! as said, used to be some good singletrack,

there is also a half decent small decent from the porthpean road, a little bit passed the first turning down to the beach on the right you'll see an entrance to an old peoples home, to the right of that is a path that will take you down into penrice woods, has a section 3/4 the way down that has a channel down the middle, becareful though as it never used to be pedals width wide!! couple of boulders at the bottom to mark the road through the woods, there is then a route aorund the pond in the woods, and a couple of sections around the woods, (the pond is to the left after you get to the bottom of the route down,) if you carry on on that track then it will eventually take you through a farm that used to have a barky dog and upto a gate, turn right at the gate and it will bring you out down at the start of the trail by the sewerage works, if you effectively turn right at the bottom of the track down from the porthpean road it will take you out to the road passed the rugby club that leads out to the pentuwan/meva road,

there is a route off the trail through to pentuwan where the bridge over the river is that will take you up to heligan but have never tried that!

you could always be hardcore and ride out of Pentuwan up Pentuwan hill!! used to do it once a year and only once just to be able to say i could do it! hahah!

i dont know the state of many of the trails now though, as i havenmt ridden them since the early 00's! but seek and you shall find!

    hI allthegearnoidea,

I have been to pentewan trail today and i have found a bit of singletrack, if you go to the entrance of pentewan (by the carpark) keep going straight until you start going up onto a gravel road and turn left, go though the gate on the left (that says NO BIKES) and keep going up (the very big painful hill). You will come to a little gravel circle and a couple of benches, here you can go right and you will se a little opening in the trees and there is a little track that leads you down to the begining of the big hill that brought you up there but it is eroded away so you get stuck in the track all the way down and beware of the evil stairs at the bottom, i came off at thsat point, or, you can go left up at the gravel circle and up another little hill and there will be one gate to go down a path on your first left and further up there will be another opening on the left. Go down the path that is further up and keep following it, you will first cycle up a little but then there will be another little track that leads you down, keep following this until you get to a big stone path, cross the stone path and head up another small hill, up some awkward steps, past another NO BIKE sign and then keep riding along, this one goes on for a long time and it is mainly flat but then eventually it will start to go downhill, around a couple of corners, you will then get to a gate, after this you can either go left of right down another small decent, both sides are good and that is it. you will then be lead onto a long gravel path, you can go right to get to the beginning of the pentewan trail,

Sorry for the long post but i felt i had to share it for if anyone is in the area, and thanks for all the information you helped me with.

  • glad you found some matey!
if you start the other side up by 'Mount Caravans' in london apprentice and ride down the trail following the route to the last bit of vehicle access in the mani kings wood area where the path splits off to the right for the trail or carry on for the carpark, if you take the path that takes you for the trail, it has about 50M or so of track before the trail takes a left hand bend before a sort of style across the path, half way down the straight section of the main riad access you should be able to pick out a path or twon thereand also one or two that take you the same place by the srtyle,

also two others i know of, if your in the same area but go into the carpark section right at the end of the vehicle access, there shjould be a gate across the 'fire road' follow that section up for a bit but keep looking out on the right hand side of the trail, about 400M or so up there used ot be a section that was called 'Devils Drop' would run down from the trail up through two trees that are just over handle bars width wide into the main woods and the previous single track, but was getting a bit torn up back in the late 90's early 00's so not sure if tis ridable as such any more,

also from the same car park, there is a concrete path that goes off up close ish to the 'fire road' gate, its quite a long climb and will bring you out at a farm on the top of the hill but by riding up it allows yo uto see where to get to the path from the porthpean - pentuwan road for a Good blast down! the path used ot turn from concrete to mud where the cattle used it but was a good route back in the day!!

the other one i mentioned if you get to the section where the trail brings you through the right left corners (almost 90 degree corners each) where the track comes back up to the side of the river from the in woods section, there always used to be a boggy mud puddle there just of the side of the trail that if your coming from pentuwan side you could almost end up in if you took the bend a bit quick! if you go through that you should be able to pick out some more tracks that way! (have been thinking about the routes we used since i popsted earlier!! and was hoping you'd be back incase you found any!!) also from the middle carpark, there used to be a couple of routes that would take you off into the woods from the normal track??

will try and think of any others we used t use, and will hopefully at somepoint get the bike up and get out and about that way to see again!!

keep me posted if you find anything!! especially the single track that would take you fromt he section where the path starts of the last vehicle access in kings woods right along the bottom edge of the valley through and out to the middle carpark!
