Bike cleaning basics

Ok, so now that i've got my new bike I thought i'd get stocked up on a few bits.
I was planning on washing it down with hot soapy water, rinsing it and then applying some WD40 to the chain and sprockets?
Done a quick search and it seems like I need to get some Fenwicks/Muc Off?
Does this look like a decent guide to follow?
