Has there ever been a rider going up a hill who wasnt destroyed by another rider. In your instance, what attributes do you think the other rider had in his possession that you just couldnt compete with.

Ib be interested in reading your stories.

I have to admit, I don't think I have ever been passed on a hill. Infact, I'm not usually passed at all. That's probably because I ride when most people are working.

But here's a story for you anyway. Cause I can tell you want one.

I was doing a 65km loop which took in the infamous Path of Condie twice and the even more infamous climb out of Dunning. Well, I was climbing out of Dunning heading towards the stupid part of the climb where it ramps up to something like 25%. Well, I looked behind me, as I often do, and I noticed another rider closing in on me. Fair enough, I thought. It wouldn't have bothered me if he passed me. But I was saving my legs for the stupid 25%, so as soon as I reached it, I was out of the saddle and grinding my way up it. It was so tough, I was using a 30 ring on front and 25 on back and my cadence was still below 50. Everytime I got back into the saddle, I lost momentum, so it was back to standing which reminded me why I chose to sit back down. Then came the hairpin bend, I was struggling to get a breath in, my zip was undone as much as possible and my glasses were steaming up because of the sweat. Get to the outside for the easy line, and then the whole thing levels out and your rewarded with a view for your efforts.

Well, I never seen the other rider again. I always assumed that he wasted too much energy on the lead up to the stupid 25% part, and totally blew up.

I think tactics can play just as big a part as physical ability on a climb.

    Cheers

If I get passed it's because that rider is stronger/better/lighter (or all 3) than me. it's that simple

would you say that "lighter" would be the more critical ?

Don't know if it's more critical bit it certainly helps an awful lot. I know I climbed a lot faster 2 or 3 years ago when I was 4 stone lighter. I was a smoker at that point too so I'd imagine I'm actually fitter now.

Plain and simple; my legs, arms and cv system are rubbish. At 67/68kg's I don't think I can use the weight excuse, I've never smoked and I'm only 25.

Oh, but on one particular ocassion though there was three of them which is obviously cheating. :P

I'm build for stamina not speed.

I'd be that fast if I had a carbon bike.

    I've got man flu.

    I'm hung over.

He's probably on a much shorter route than me.

How many hours must he spend training to get that fit....I can't do that because I've got a life!

All of the above (most rides). The don't pass me downhill though!

by destroyed do you mean morally?

trick is to ride at your own pace, the climber might be slower on the descent/flat or just have fresher legs

I was drafted by someone for a couple of miles and then come the first steep hill he literally sprinted past me without some much as a sideways glance.

    ... I was so impressed!

I was about 10 miles into my commute and pretty puffed actually.

I would have responded but that polka dot shirt is overrated imo!
