hi im new to road riding and just joined the local road club . done 3 rides with them and been told they do 10tt's on an eve joined with some other local clubs. ive been encouraged to go give it a bash

but im wondering what sort of time should i be heading for before trying one and finishing dead last ;-) quite fancy a go but no idea what sort of pace people ride 10 miles in.

I had a look at my local clubs times, and they were pretty damned impressive.

Average seemed to be around 25, best was around 22, and slowest was around 34.

Going by those times, If I 'competed' I would come in around 51st out of 52 entrants

Everyone has to start somewhere though, why not work out a 10 mile route near you, and test yourself on there, so you have some idea of what your capable of.

Marin Palisades Trail 91 and 06
    Scott CR1 SL 12
    Cannondale Synapse Adventure 15 & 16 Di2
    Scott Foil 18
  • yeah i'll have to give that a go. cheers mate

Anything under 30 mins for your first attempt is a good ride I'd say (20 mph average) - set a time and then try to beat it in the coming weeks.

Be aware that evening TT's normally end mid August due to the evenings drawing in so realistically only 4 weeks TTing to go
  • maybe wait til next season if thats the case. ill ask on the sunday clubrun cheers

Why? "Carpe Diem" and all that stuff.
  • lol i will see how many there is remaining as i would have liked a few weeks before it to do some specific runs ;-)

i have only had road bike for 4 weeksand too am going to go for my first 10m TT next wednesday... i'm really nervous as only been along for one club ride so dont really know anyone.

The times seem to be from 22mins to 43min!! that gives me confidence as i would hope to to 28-32 mins first time out.

These trails stop end august as well, but i REALLY want to have a go before next year or i'll regret it.

Is there a national type gradient for TT's? Do they have to include a certain number of hills or flats??

No - there is no National standard for TT courses - some are obviously faster than others, and these are well known in the "testing" community and are popular as a result.

I remember my first ever 10-mile TT, got a blinding time of 1hr 4mins! It was an evening drop in, pay your £2 stick your number on your back & off you go. They were a bit short of marshalls that night, as in they didn't have any. Hol season you see. Never mind, it's straight on at the 3rd mini roundabout, left at the 4th one. No, no it's left at the 3rd one, right it's ok I'll keep my eye on my minute man. Minute man was one of the fastest in the club though, lost him. Bugger, now which roundabout was it I turned at? So my time was pretty good for my almost 25-miles that I ended up doing after getting a wee bit lost & stopping to ask some old bloke on a shopping bike if he knew anything about a TT & where the main road was? "The main road, hmmmm. This used to be the main road until 1956! Then the local corporation decided" Never mind I'll find it, thanks!!!
I was dead chuffed at my time for the distance, the only problem was the time keeper & just about everyone else had bogged off home. I think they thought I'd just ridden off into yonder like Forest Gump "I just felt like cycling/running" Whatever!!!!!!
