I am looking to build a custom wheel set for my Ransom. I have built trail sets but never a strong AM set so I have about as much knowledge as I have crash avoidance skill...very little

I was going to run Hope Pro 2's or Chris King hubs but their are plenty of other options out there but I know ZIP about them. Oh and I wont touch shimano, not for any bad reason I just dont want to run shimano hubs.

My aim is for an 'AM' set that is super light and strong .Roughly 1700g -1900g is the ball park I am after.

I ride pretty much anything I can but I am not a heavy or a particularly abusive rider ie no massive jumps or massively full on downhill.

What do you guys think is a solid reliable long lasting combination?

Advice from the brains trust is as always, appreciated :D

  • Talk to the guys at Merlin Cycles, they'll advise what's best for you and wheels are their speciality. They stock Hope but not sure about King, and they've plenty of MAvic rims to choose form, if you fancy some AM specific wheels, they 've got these on a web offer click here

If you want something cool and a bit different, try burgtec hubs or tune, sapim cx-ray spokes and XM179s, or even stans flow or arch, cannot remember which one would be good for you, and get them done by a good local wheelbuilder.

It wont be cheap, the cx-rays define light and strong!

Those burgtec hubs look pretty sweet. Not finding many reviews of them though.

The tune hubs a red spokes that you can get are ridiculously pimp!

XM 717's seem to be raved about too so cheers for all the advice this all helps in making a call!

my money would go on a set of pro 2 hubs with mavic xm819 rims, this gives the option to run tubeless and they weigh about 1.9k, very respectab le for a very tough wheel, plus you can choose a hub colour to suit your bike.

mine cost about 280 from merlin, arrived in less than a week and like all good bike parts, i dont notice them or have to worry about being delicate around them.

I run Hope Pro II's on Mavic 819's. Strong, light and tubeless
