8 speed campy with new 10 speed wheel---spacers?

I have an old 8 speed campy set up on my bad weather bike.
I need a new rear wheel as the braking surface is deeply worn.

I believe I need some form of spacer kit but know nothing about it.

Which kit would I need and where could I find one, and do I use my existing 8 speed cassette/chain or do I need a new 10 speed version?

All help gratefully received.

  • hello
i'm afraid the 8spd cassette will not fit onto a 10 spd wheel,
If you have 8spd shifters then your options are limited, what is the condition of the current cassette and hub? if they are good then my advice would be to have the wheel rebuilt with a new rim and spokes.
I am running 8spd campg and have looked into it myself, i guess there might be a way round it with spacers and a 10 spd cassette or some sort of shift device but i'm pretty sure it would work out a lot more expensive than a wheel rebuild. sorry

Buy a Veloce 9 speed cassette and Campag spacer Kit 03 and drop the largest cog.
I'd rather walk than use Shimano
  • i stand corrected, thanks Rob, having said that unless you happen to have a 10spd wheel and a 9 speed cassette lying around ( or can source them very cheaply if your current hub and cassette are in good nick i would still go for a new rim, would be very cheap (under £40 I would think possibly even less if you do the swap yourself (not too hard))
    good luck

  • thanks for the help chaps.

I have found the spacer kit at branford bike for 30 us dollars plus shipping and a 9 speed cassette is around £30 and a lockring around £12 (do I need a new lockring?)
    Plus a new rear wheel.

so to consider the other option for price comparison.

My hub is good, I overhauled it last year and the 8 speed cassette is also nearly new so any ideas how much and where I could have my wheel rebuilt.
I live in Fleet, Hampshire if it helps locate a local option.

EDIT as crossed with Custom Freaks reply

Think the re build is the best way for me so any ideas where or how to get it done would be appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Will.
  • hello what is the current rim? if it is still available you could do the swap yourself (not hard, sheldon's website would help, all you would need is a spoke key, if you really cant get it straight your lbs shouldn't charge much to true it, a quick phone round should give you an idea, there must be a lbs near you run by a good old boy who would do a good job.

Will, you don't need to go to the US for the parts - somewhere like Mercian Cycles in Derby should have the spacer kit. 9 speed cassettes from Campagnolo or Miche for about £15. For a rim replacement, Cycle Kingdom in Fleet should be able to sort you out. alternatively if you want a reputable wheel build, try Rohan at Sigma Sport in Kingston
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Give Condor a ring about the spacer kit...they sell quite a few Campag spares including the Record carbon star fangled headset thing as seperate items...they may well do the spacer kit.
I'd rather walk than use Shimano
  • So many options,

The current rim is the origional campag omnicrom and is about 10 years old or so.
It is quite a low profile 32H rim.
Could I buy an open pro rim and just wind my spokes into it and maybe get a shop to do the final truing maybe I should use new spokes since they are old now.
I am capable of basic truing etc.
I dont have a clue what length/gauge spokes i would need though.

What 8 speed hub is it?
I'd rather walk than use Shimano
  • i'd be tempted to go for an open pro and new spokes, the spokes should only be a tenner or so and the build not much more, a spoke calculator likethe one on the dt website would be able to tell you what length you need but for the extra tenner i would go with a brand new set. what is the condition of the front? you might get a good deal on having them both sorted at once, new rims and spokes all round, as good as a new set of wheels!

  • The groupset is campy Stratos from about 1994 cant give any more info than that on the hub, the bike is a specialized Allez from 94.

The front wheel has alredy been replaced with a shimano 105 one from my decent bike which I upgraded to Mavic Ksyriums last year.
Think I will call a couple of places I have seen on the web and try my local Cycle kingdom in Fleet.
Velocity bikes in Portsmouth seem to sound good on their site--specializing in wheel builds for £20 plus parts.

What rims/spokes would you recommend as I have no knowledge og custom builds?
