...I am having some really, really good rides at the moment...my form is good...contrasting the days when I seem to be hardly able to turn the bliming pedals...is it the time of year or what I'm eating...who knows? Anyone else have those times when your riding is godlike?

It is very weird. Some nights I feel great - itching to get on the bike, spool up the gears and have a blast - five minutes later I'm grinding it out desperately trying to maintain headway into a moderately stiff breeze.

Other nights I'm feeling wasted - drag myself onto the bike and an hour later am giving it beans at 28 mph listening to the thrum of my drive chain wishing that the road was longer.....

There seems to be no telling whixh one I'm going to be. I had four days off the bike Sat, Sun, Mon, Tues and thought I'd be popping spokes and spitting fire on Wed....

    Nope.

Today however I'm back in form and was pushing out some wattage into work this morning.....

    I think it's atmospherics.

For me so much depends on the conditions. I can ride to and from work hardly feeling it, but put in a little bit of wind and by the time I get home I feel destroyed. Make it a little colder and once again it takes lot more out of me.

I felt like I had a right flyer on the way home last night, not sure if it was the incentive of getting a ride a slightly longer route or the crisps that I consumed around 4:30 just giving me some extra energy! Same happened once on way home from London after stuffing myself at a chinese buffet at lunch, felt like I had bags of energy :-)

Like Greg say's it does vary for me, and I can't pin it down to any one particular thing (asides from the food on odd occasions) as I normally have a fairly good lunch at more or less the same time each day.

Cycling into a strong wind is like the mighty hands of Zeus pressing against your chest.

I think its more to do with your state of mind more than anything else, some days I fly up hills which gave me grief the week before, other days I just think 'why am I doing this?'
Today i didn't ride as I am feeling crappy and recovering from a hard ride and just know I would suffer on my bike.

...boybiker I think that is the secret,,,state of mind...I can defeat myself before I even start if I am in the wrong frame of mind...Positive, positive, positive it's the only way forward. On the other hand there are days when your body just needs to rest and recover.

...what's happened to yer hair by the way? Looks very red...you youngsters

I misread another cyclists speed today, I indicated to pull around him and as I shot off I think he thought I was racing him  Then he overtook me as I was getting off to go a different way... 10 minutes later I saw him again as I was off the bike catching me breath. Caught me breath, got back on and overtook him again. No real acheivement as I think he'd cycled more than me
  • I reckon the sensation of feeling like a ride was a flier is mostly about perception.

I'm likely to notice that I rode home with a good average speed, more than I'm likely to notice there was a hurricane force wind assisting me all the way

If things are the other way, and I'm riding extra sluggish, then the problem must be the wind. :P

I had a right old wind up me today  I couldnt beleive the speed I was getting as a result - must have been 30mph atleast as I was catching up with the cars down the road, and then a policeman in a car gave me a right look
