Hi I recently got a Trek Fuel EX8 and i have noticed that although the brakes work, if i pull the levers hard they will come so far back they can touch the bar, does this mean i need to blead them? if so is this normal to get air into the system so quickly? i have had the bike since April.

the brakes havent been messed with, i have took the pads out and recentralized the callipers but thats all.

have you adjusted the reach? there is an allen headed adjuster, as shown in the manual, use it to set the lever position.

when you pull the lever this hard is it required to stop the bike or are you just seeing what might "pop".

    Thanks for your speedy reply.

No they seem to work fine on the trial.
It just didnt seem right that was all, i was expecting they would stop about an inch from the bar.
I had noticed the reach adjuster in the manual, will get a "loose" 2mm A Key today, all the ones on multitools etc wont fit so i was unable to change this last night.

I also noticed, when I got a bike with Juicy 5's, that they do seem V. spongey compared to say, Tektro's. I found they bed in pretty quick and the power/modulation ramps up after the initial bedding in. Also try the 'elastic band holding lever overnight' method often mentioned elsewhere. It must be something to do with fault lines and parallel universes :? , 'cos although it doesn't seem like it should do anything, it only bloody works!!!!

Just adjusted the reach and there much better now, i will try the Elastic band method as well not like it cost me anything, plus i am very curious now :-)

I've had these brakes since April also. The bite point is rubbish! you got to pull the levers about 75% of their total travel before they engage. Yes the travel can be adjusted, but this means they can bottom out onto the grips - no braking!! Apparently this is a characteristic of these brakes. Otherwise they are very good brakes.

i had to bleed my j5s as soon as i fitted them,.. they were doing this almost hitting the bar before they would stop me.. squashing my fingers i bled them and they were ok after that,.. avids are good but do require bleeding frequently. they can be a pain in the poooo shoooot to to bleed.
