Just purchased myself a nice Ultegra Wheelset :) ...Shimano recommend spoke hole plugs instead of Rim Tape....only problem is I can't find anywhere online that sells them or if indeed they are better than rim tape at all....(first time I've replaced wheels on my first bike, so this is new territory for me). Can anybody share any pearls of wisdom?

Shimano do seem to have spoke plugs but from googling I can only find them as part of a service pack including spokes, washers and hub nuts at £50. A Shimano dealer might be able to get them in for you.

The only other ones I've ever seen are called Veloplugs. Planet X sell them and might be the easiest place to get them but at £17 they're a bit expensive. You could save a few quid and get them from Veloplugs themselves.

There's nothing wrong with good old fashioned rim tape though. I prefer the velox cloth type personally. Shimano probably only recommend plugs because it's one more thing they can sell you.

they'll make tyre fitting easier probably - the plugs I mean - the rim tape adds thickness where you want to sink the tyre bead.
