Anyone planning on riding this, i have no idea what to expect, ok a small idea as i did newnham a few years back.
Can it get really bad to warrant mud tyres, anything else i should know?

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

This reply may be too late but...
I did the fun section at the series last year. Really enjoyed it. Some great cycling in and out the woods, a bit of mud and a watersplash. Go for it!

Dazza - what date? I'm seriously considering having a go if I can make sure baby arrangements are sorted! Either Nov or Jan - March one is on wife's birthday!0
-
Its on the 16th Nov
if youve never done it before, i would go with the fun ride in the morning.
the fun event is 3 laps, and if you find that easy there is rnd 2 & 3 in jan & feb where you could enter sports or masters which are 4 laps.
also depends on how much riding you do. I think if you are training/riding xc a couple of times a week at a good pace, for about 1-2 hrs, there should be no reason why you shouldnt be able to do a 3 or 4 lap category.
be prepared though! its not called soggy bottoms for nothing and judging on the weather so far might live up to its name. make sure you take enough food and fluids to keep you going for 2 hours.0 -
apologies rnd 2 is jan, rnd 3 is march!0
-
Cheers Justin - I ride 10 miles a day, about 20 at weekends, plus run 2-3 times a week (about 3-5 miles a go off road) si am hopefully fairly fit.
I have mudguards...0 -
Matt - I believe you were on the yogi dartmoor ride in march which I was also on. the group was so large it was impossible to meet everyone!
sports cat should be a doddle for you!!0 -
Justin - I was indeed. I was the bloke that walked through the first river: That girls Camelbak was borrowed (now got my own "Mans" one!!) BTW!
Which one were you (which bike? The Gary Fisher?) I tried to remember names but there were too many to remember!0 -
yep its the gary fisher thats on this link.
from memory I dont think you were the only loon not to use the stones provided! I think for some it may have been unintended though!0 -
Justin - the guy in the yellow top (with red arms) also forded the stream. Think we were the only ones to do that one, but others did other ones. Rather damp!0

glad you posted this, was about to post myself, am planning to do it, pending i can get the 16th off work!!
but i was chatting to my friend in electronics today as he's doing it as well and we both had no idea what to expect, we're both fairly decent XC riders (he more so than i) and are pretty fit
but as its a race theres bound to be very good people there but having never done a race before we don't know whether if we're at the back giving everything we should be down or not, quite strange when you think about it0 -

You would have no probs with the Fun race. Last year I did 2 rounds (Fun class) and came 4th & 5th. Only got overtaken by about 10 'kids' in the Junior class!
If I feel my ribs are up to it, I will be doing the Veterans class this year!Stumpjumper FSR 09/10 Pro Carbon, Genesis Vapour CX20 ('17)Carbon, Rose Xeon CW3000 '14, Raleigh R50

Just entered the "Fun" race so no turning back now!0
-
excellent. should be good, but im sure you will find it quite easy!
my bike has been in and out of the lbs with problem after problem over the last 4 weeks, so havent done any riding.
have had brand new juicy 5's fitted, so am not sure if they will have bedded in in time.
Hopefully pick it up (again) tomorrow. if i get the chance to ride before the end of the week, to test my brakes and fitness will decide then!!
I just hate doing stuff like that when I havent done the training. The first soggy bottoms i did (in the 4 lap sport category) I got dehydrated after 2 and a half laps and for the rest of the race suffered big time!0 -

Sorry FSR I got there late.......maybe if you enter the main race next time. Having said that I think Steve and me might be racing next time, we were drooling over that lovely Newnham singletrack.
Don't spose you've got a Canon flashgun you could lend me? Or are you a Nikon man?0 -
 A NIKON man!!!!! Ouch . . . . . haven't had anyone insult me so much before. :P
Strangely, I've had a flash on long term loan until recently. Looking to buy one now.
550EX's have been fetching £75 - £90 on fleabay.
or a new 430 II is £140
You'd have got some crackin curtain flash shots in the woods. Particularly looking at some of the slow shutter work you've done on a few of your shots.
This for example:
and this one's great
BTW if anyone did get any shots on #45, please post 'em.
Don't care how bad I look - I ain't a pretty picture at the best of timesStumpjumper FSR 09/10 Pro Carbon, Genesis Vapour CX20 ('17)Carbon, Rose Xeon CW3000 '14, Raleigh R50

i really enjoyed this, first ever XC race and i came 17th in the sport, considering i started quite literally last i was pleased
can't wait to do the januray one, i reccomend it, sooooo much fun0 -
i did the first round, hadn't rode since cheddar bike fest and had the daddy of colds all weekend came last of the finishers in the masters class but REALLY enjoyed it found it hard work in the mud, i ride the wrong type of bike and obviously not that fit but hay ho.
going to try a bit harder prep wise and get a bit higher up the finishing order but as long as i come over the finish line smilling it doesnt matter, i was the last to finsih in real time and the cheering at the finish was excellent cant wait for january.Giant TCR
