Shimano Dura Ace cassette
Hi,
I have just purchased a second hand road bike equipped with a Dura Ace groupset which works like a dream. However I would like to change the cassette which is currently an 8 cog 11-21 to something with a wider range. I note that the cassettes available on Wiggle are 9 or 10 speed for Dura Ace. What are the general rules regarding changing cassettes? Would there be a problem fitting a 9-speed cassette? Also, do i have to stick to Dura Ace or would other more budget level Shimano cassettes be compatible?
Apologies for the basic nature of the question however I cannot find anything that will give me a answer?
Thanks

If you change from 8speed to 9speed you WILL need to change a fair bit of your bike:
1. Cassette
2. Chain (9spd uses a narrower chain, plus your chain will be worn.)
3. Shifters (Width between cogs will be different so it won't change gear properly)
4. Front/rear mechs (Because of chain width)
The front/rear mechs aren't so important, but if your changing that much, why not go 10 speed? Dura Ace 9spd sets are old and parts aren't as available. With 105 groupsets now being very good, light and available so cheaply, it would make more sense.jedster wrote:Just off to contemplate my own mortality and inevitable descent into decrepedness.

If your Dura Ace gear levers are STIs and are 8 speed then you will have to fit another 8 speed cassette. If they are non indexed friction shifters then you could probably fit a 9 speed cassette instead.
As far as the cassette is concerned you can fit any quality from Shimano or Sram and it will be ok.He is not the messiah, he is a very naughty boy !!0 -

Yeah - I'd stick with 8 speed to be honest. You can use a lesser groupset though - I'd go with ultegra or even 105.0

Thanks to all who posted. I will go down the 8 speed replacement route0
