Clapham Common

There was a lady giving out leaflets to cyclists crossing Clapham Common this morning. Apparently at least one pedestrian has been hit by a cyclist on the common, so they will be starting to enforce byelaws and traffic laws. There will be uniformed and plain clothed patrols on the common in the future. The best bit is the speed limit that will apparently be enforced.... 5mph!!!!

Now, I have to admit that I'm annoyed if accidents have been caused by idiotic cyclists riding fast and not paying attention, but I've not seen any of these accidents in person, so it is hard to say who was to blame. The whole 5mph thing seems a little ridiculous though. Hopefully they will be realistic as it is almost impossible to ride that slowly, but I can imagine a jobsworth stopping everyone for riding too fast.

My wife was stopped this morning by a park ranger and police community support officer and given one of the leaflets. She was told by them they considered 5mph to be just a bit faster than walking speed. They might as well ask cyclists to dismount if they are really going to enforce this speed.

Just go round the common then... quicker and safer.

There was a Metropolitan Police Officer on the path today talking to someone. I also spoke to the police support person the other morning and had a rant about pedestrians with children and dogs (who should be on a leash) who also need to be made more aware of the fact that it is a BIKE PATH!

Go 'off road' - on the grass 8)

Pedestrians and cyclists = uncomfortable mix

I hope runners are fitted with bells so they don't startle us when they overtake. :D

To be fair, there are plenty of cyclists cycling down the "no cycling" pedestrian paths too.

Think they're clamping down on lots of things in Clapham Common. I do fitness training there and we've been told to all cross paths in a group, give people a wide berth etc etc.

We have the same at Southampton Common, but there are designated paths and areas for cyclists and peds to share - trouble is some of the pedestrians dont realise this and get snotty.
