Saddle rails and seatpost

I decided to change my saddle and seatpost. Having fitted it, I have been playing with the positioning to get it just right.
I noticed I have marked the saddle rails from where it attaches to the seatpost. Is this to be expected, or does it means I have tightened it up to much? Also, how do you know how tight to do up a seatpost. I have had some slippage problems so been doing it tighter but worried about having done it up too much now.
Thanks
Van.

guess it must also depend on rails?
i've gone with old school Brooks B17 Narrow with Steel rails."The grass is always greener on the other side - unless Jens Voigt has been riding on the other side in which case it's white with the salty, dried tears of all the riders whose souls he has crushed."0 -
I often mark the rails- it is probably more likely to be obvious if the rails are painted in some way (like the black steel Brooks rails for example.)
Regarding the seatpost, there are torque specifications but a rough rule of thumb would be tight enough that your post doesn't slip, and no tighter. I hope you greased the post (unless it's carbon, in which case I hope you didn't )0
