Is it just me or do the dulcit tones that seem to wander out of Mr Kellys' mouth make anyone else want to smash the screen of their brand new 40inch samsung lcd. Surley this man should come with a health warning. LISTENING TO THIS MAN WILL DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH. I know he was a great cyclist, but come on eurosport, my thumb is sore after repeatedly muting the sound.

Certainly. Emma Davies fitted 4 certainly's into one sentence last week - it must be contagious - certainly!

He reminds me of the most boring priest from Father Ted - certainly!

No disrespect though - he was certainly one of the best all-time cyclists - certainly! I just object to being bored to death. And it's nothing to do with the accent BTY - I love Irish - certainly!!

i disagree i think the two (David/Sean) are a great team.
you carn't deny he knows his stuff his knowledge of what is happening in the peleton are second to none when it comes to tactics ect.
agree with the (certainly) thing though but just makes me giggle now.
and it could be worse you could have David Duffield

After reading the thread I just had to post my first comment on Bike Radar.

I think Sean Kelly is God ! His Cert-tent-lees are absolutely classic ! Its been adopted in my family,.it cracks us all up ! I think the entire eurosport team have been carefully thought out and gel really well. The studio talk is great and so is the commentary.

I ask you all to tune into ITV4 and watch with utter boredom at the false commentary. It is always pre-recorded and Phil Liggett has well rehearsed his commentary. What a surprise the way they always predict the winner !! Not only do we have to suffer the constant adverts in an hour long slot but they then go off on a walk about to show us the locals eating croissants ! Yawn !!

Sean Kelly should be cert-tent-lee APPRECIATED.

    Hi there certainly,

Well, Certainly I think he is a huge talent. But I usually get the first sentence and the rest is a murmur; a bit like a diesel engine in the background. You know it's there, but you don't pay any attention.

But at least I don't have to hit the mute button like I do when the Formula One is on. Those two clowns have caused me to lose all interest in what was once a great sport.

    Cheers certainly

Sean: no, certintly not, I tink that tonymufc has been hot and heavy right from the get go while my cliches have pushed on up the road, you know, well certintly its no major disaster for the commentating team today.

David: Lovely castle we're passing there, well worth a visit. Question from the viewers Emma, how do you take a natural break on the bike?

(and yes this is far better than ITV)

Hot and heavy, steady on my friend I was just airing my opinion, after all this is a forum. My point in around about way was that because he was a great cyclist doesn't mean that he makes a good comentator. I'm a big football fan as you've probably guessed from my name and the worse thing about football comentry is listening to bloody Mark Lawrenceson. Now Liverpool fans would probably say that he is great but the rest of the football world would most certainly disagree. Lots of love Tony.

Erm, well its the "erms" , that certainly annoy me big time.

I just end up cringing everytime he says "erm" to the extent that I can no longer concentrate on what he is saying. Having said that Emma Davies is MORE annoying, although perhaps not quite as bad as that american woman they had on last year - thank god she's not around this tour...argh!

Eurosport has better coverage, and Harmon is a good comentator. Its just Kelly, he's not that good on the MIC. Maybe their should be a poll to see haw many like the guy and how many don't. Sorry Sean, nothing personal!!!!!!!
  • ive got a feeling that sean wont take it too personally tony

My view? One of the all time greats on the bike..poor commentator off it, however, as someone else mentioned earlier his knowledge of whats happening (or about to happen) is superb. Now emma davis on the other hand.......talk about an overused mute button

I'm a great fan of Seans and have been since I was a teenager when he was racing. He may not be the most elegant and sophisticated of speakers and he does overuse some phrases..."as we say in cycling terms", but I think he complements Harmon well as a team.

To the people that don't like Sean all I can say is that he has improved. Back during the last Olympics in 04 he was previewing the Cycling road race on irish TV and was describing a riders physique ... "he is very muscu.. muscul... (pause for a few seconds wondering can I pronounce the word...opps I can't) .. he has a lot of muscle"

    Reasons to love Kelly

    He's human, insightful and inteligent.

    His accent is crazed Cork/Belgian.

He's still winning He wins all these old codger events.

Remember the time he crashed about 10k into a stage and got back on, rode the remaning 200k THEN went to see the doctor about his broken collarbone. I was more surprised that Kelly's bones can actually be broken he's that hard!!!

If you don't like Kelly try listening to the USA slanted soundbite Ligget coverage on ITV4, how the mighty are fallen :(

Five live is certaintly like radio LiverpoolFC when him and Alan Green get going. Do you listen to Lawro's predictions on a Friday night on five live? If he had got his scores right, Manchester City would have been relegated several times over by now. What is it with him and City? I used to quite like listening to Alan Green but he's going majorly over the top now with some of the comments he makes - I thought the BBC were supposed to be unbiased. Certaintly.

I've never heard Duffield but I would really like to. Is he ever coming back?

You HAVE to hear Duffers at least once to know why these threads exist...
If there is a clash of cycling on Eurosports 1&2 in the coming months, Duffield wil be on the other one....
Enjoy it all being blown to pieces...

And Liverpool would have won the league for the past 5 years too - he always predicts that they'll win.

Tell me who is your local team, (that's not muppet fc by any chance) instead of hanging your hat on one of the top pegs.

The problem with Sean Kelly's contribution is "Harmon".
The hand over (if it ever comes) is 90% a question and and the first response from SK is "Certainly" to the moron.

We (some of us) have had a lot of laughs with SK's subtle responses to Harmon, unknowingly talking crap again.
Sometimes Harmon dosn't know he's had the pee wee taken out of him, until he reads the forums.
Yes you are right he does it in a "Low" voice and that makes it all the more enjoyable.

Harmon is the Bore and it gets worse when he is talking to the other "Motor Bike" moron in Paris and their exploits on wet roads. Poor Dears.

  • I really enjoy Sean Kelly's commentary. I even chuckle to myself each time big Sean uses the words "certainly", "majorly" and "big time". You've also got to listen for the odd profanity snuck in for good measure - i.e. "You know, sometimes riders can get a bit lazy, you know? I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Director Sportif gave him a reeal fookin' drillin!"

As long as Eurosport field the dream team of Harmon and Kelly, I'll watch them!

King Kelly would be the 1st to admit he`s not a commentator, the guy was and still is a Cycling legend he obviously still loves the sport,if Eurosport wanted someone other than Sean to do the shared commentary i think they would have asked them to....christ some folk are not happy what would you rather want someone like a CAVENDISH,BOARDMAN or dare i say it a Gary Lineker type.....god these 3 would make watching paint dry look interesting. Eurosport is far better now now that they got rid of that God forsaken women Kristy Anderson.do you remember this yankee pain in the A£%$ ???? Liggett and Sherwin have sold their souls to an American Audience and all that they spout now is Bull$**& if you pardon the pun..so Give Sean a break he could probably still beat most of us on 1 leg.

I enjoyed the eurosport commentary this year - Kelly is great, sometimes he would totally ignore questions or not give Harmon the answer he wanted to hear. One example was Harmon asking four times what a certain climb was like - Kelly answered in terms of condition and team tactics - not on the actual physical nature of the climb. Then Harmon would ask again and the process repeated. I certainly enjoyed that.

I actually found myself laughing evertime Kelly said "certainly" which pretty much meant I was laughing to myself alot!!!

Thanks for the link. Don't buy Private Eye much at the moment, but was wondering - has Duffers had ever had a quote featured in their "Colemanballs" column?

    David

P.S. "All around the Wrekin" isn't exclusive to Duffers, and is in fact a common expression in parts of the Midlands for doing something in a roundabout, protracted way.
