Posting this here as think useful tip for beginners and could also fit into either sportives or touring section.

Did SUS08 last weekend (great event BTW). Planned a days riding in the area before and stopped off at service station in hope of getting a good local map.

Could not find one but did find this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0749549874/ref=s9subs_c3_img1-rfc_p?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0RNEC50RVFH99TY4A81N&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=139042391&pf_rd_i=468294

It turned out to be a remarkably good map for cycling use. Scale is very good, most rides will fit on 2-3 pages, seems to have even tiny roads on it. Its made of good quality paper, I just ripped out pages I needed/stuffed into pocket. Following days full ride still look new.

Also, bizarrely, it has very good local naming of things like forests, hills etc. Not sure why these are of interest to truckers but they are very useful for us in finding out what hill we have just climbed. Only thing it lacks is contour lines but easier to read as a result and way hills are shown (plus "<"s for steep sections) makes it pretty clear whether the road is flat or not.

Would be perfect for a LEJOG ride.

(Also if any unicyclists out there has a guide to bridge height..... :D )

Anyway having got it I reckon its all the map I will ever need for the UK. Bit of a shame since already have 10+ OS Explorer maps but will save me the cost of buying any more.
