Iam using my mtb to commutte to work. I have flat pedals, and up until now have been wearing trainers - now I am starting to feel the pedals through the trainer - I don't want to use cleats yet - can anyone recommend a decent cheap shoe ? - trainer style - but with a stiffer sole ?

Any SPD shoe - you don't need to use cleats.

661 Tiburon, or even one of their skate-styled shoes such as a Dually. They look like regular sneakers but have stiffening shank in the sole to make them more suitable for cycling.0

i noticed a massive difference when i upgraded from trainers to proper mtb shoes (cannondale all terrain looking shoes with spd ability!), so much more comfort from them and the extra sole stiffness made a lot of difference i felt!
have since moved on to 'proper' mtb spd shoes but with out the cannondale ones i doubt i would have!Timmo.

Would these do the trick ?

Yes. They're okay. There are many shoes in the £20-£25 range in my previous post. Even cheaper, but dependent on size,0

If you mean the dhb T1 Cycling Shoes linked to above the answer is yes. The recess for the cleats is covered by the screw on pad shown in the lowest image. The shoes probably don't come with any cleats.

You're right. No cleats.
Cleats are usually be supplied with your pedals0 -

I just bought the Specialized MTB
Look here they are really good. I actually went to my local Evans and he put them through as 39.99 too, which was a bargain if I do say so myself!! I didin't realise till after I had left as was buying a few things. They were really helpful too, put the cleats on for me from the pedals I bought, have since moved them around but was a nice gesture. They were really helpful too, would of used my LBS but they didn't keep any in stock and wouldn't get me any in to try on before I bought, so they lost my business!
I'd really reccommend investing a it will be worth it in the long run!0 -
i nearly went for those specialised ones but they didnt have them for my size feet, many good reports read on the web about them too!Timmo.
