Noob's problem with flightdeck controls

Hi all, this is my first post so excuse my ignorance - i'm new to road bikes.
I have the 3300 flightdeck controls on my Giant OCR3 which I bought 2nd hand yesterday, I'm replacing the brake cables and the levers dont seem to spring back properly now whereas before they had a strong return.
The shimano website shows an exploded control unit but I cant see how the return spring fits properly and i'm 99% sure this is the problem.
The diagram mentions a "special" return spring setting tool, is this really necessary?
The return spring has a bend in it which i assume locates in the small hole in the brake lever frame where the spring sits but the other end of the spring doesnt seem to locate to anything so i assemble it all and put the pivoting pin in and it all functions but just doesnt return properly.
Any help is appreciated.
#5 being the spring im talking about.

Just a guess but I would say that IF you took the spring out(for whatever reason) that
you need to put it back the way it came out, under tension. It was probably wound up a bit when it was installed at the factory and when you took it off it unwound. So in
answer to your question about a return spring seting tool I would have to say "YES.
Tell me again why you took this apart or just tell me why. :? :?:

To replace the brake cable - is there another way?
Like i said I'm new to road bikes although experienced with a spanner - i just couldnt see how the spring tensioned, i need an extra hand and eyes which look through metal and plastic.0 -

Brilliant document thank you.
I should have mentioned that the cable was siezed in the unit so it had to be stripped to be brutalised out.0
